Calories while Breastfeeding

I just started with MFP yesterday, When I enter all my info it tells me to have 1200 calories everyday. But I am breastfeeding on demand and am not exactly sure how many calories I am suppose to add on. If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Depending on how often you breasfeed you can burn 250-300 calories.

    Hi,

I checked around different resources online, and while some numbers varied somewhat from the following (a general value I ran into was 20 calories/ounce of milk produced), and various resources basically stated different forms of 'it depends', the following falls within the overall range I saw cited, and might be a good place to start (this is from about.com) --

How many calories does breastfeeding really burn?

Asked by safirawilliams on Sep 12, 2008 in Family & Pregnancy

I've heard that one burns between 500 and 800 calories by breastfeeding. Is it really true?

    Answer

It is true. To produce about 25 ounces of milk a day, it costs the nursing mother about 650 calories above her usual requirements. To meet this energy need, the Institute of Medicine recommends eating 500 calories extra calories a day. The remaining 150 calories are drawn from fat stores accumulated during pregnancy. It is important that the calories come from nutritious foods, especially meat-type foods for protein and iron and dairy products for calcium. Breastfeeding mothers usually lose 1 to 4 pounds per month without restricting their calorie intake. Read about nutrition for nursing moms at About.com.

!!!!!! You are breastfeeding! Wait until you stop!. You are burning ALOT of calories doing that and 1200 is the LOWEST someone not breastfeeding should go! I lost 35 lbs in 3 months when I was breastfeeding all by itself. Just make sure you are drinking enough water and eating enough to support you and your baby!

SERIOUSLY! Not kidding! ASK YOUR DOCTOR/OBGYN about it!!!!!!

Our bodies burn almost 20 calories to make just an ounce of breast milk. If your baby eats 19-30 ounces a day, that's anywhere between 380-600 calories burned U can add breastfeeding under food and it adjust ur calories accordingly,f you are exclusively breast feeding, you should be eating about 500 calories extra per day.
there are entries if you search the food database you can choose which best fits your nursing schedule and it will add calories to your diary for the day
