Hello, I'm Carmen and I'm addicted to...

Hello, I'm Carmen and I'm addicted to carbs, the really bad kind. Sugar, soda, chips, fast food, candy, cake, etc. I am really here to learn a healthier lifestyle. I did WW a couple of years ago after my daughter was born and did fairly well. After that, my family and I moved to the country of Mexico and were quickly acclimated to the very-high carb lifestyle which is very common there. I didn't find much support through WW in Mexico and quickly deactivated my account. With such a bad diet I've been experiencing a lot of fatigue, foggy-head, crankiness and headaches. After two years there, 20 lbs slowly crept back on back on and now that we are back in the US I'm trying to relearn how to make healthy food choices. We are visiting Costa Rica next month to see if we want to relocate there or back to Mexico. I found this site after Sparkpeople (too busy!!) and hope I can make a success of it now and also while out of the US. Does anyone know if this site accessible outside of the US?

Anyway, due to my addiction to carbs, I'm initially trying to limit them to around 100g a day, mainly simple carbs. Also hoping that my husband will become inspired as he has about 40 lbs he needs to lose.

Nice to meet you all! :)

Hi Carmen! I can relate because I have a very addictive personality. If I were you I would set up a support group before moving anywhere new. Addiction is a behavior so if you do positive things like go to meetings, clubs, dances, church ect. It's more likely you will have an easy time staying away from carbs. GL! Kara:smile:

People are here from all over the world. There are some good things that you can use from either of those countries. Particuarly Mexicco. Tons of fresh tomato and corn, tomatillo and jicama. Salads and grilled foods. Good luck.

Hi Carmen! Welcome to MFP. I wish you and your husband lots of success. Here's a thought.....How about instead of limiting your carbs, you limit the processed foods? Carbs are great!! Fast food, candy, cake, sugar are not. Enjoy your potatoes, veggies, grains, beans, oats, whole wheat pancakes, etc. Unless medically necessary, you don't have to cut out or limit your carbs to attain a healthy lifestyle.

I, too, have a serious problem with sweets and to a certain extent carbs.

It's been a difficult year for me, too, since I moved 400 miles away from my fiance and friends to serve a full-time internship in church ministry. The change in location and schedule led to a change in lifestyle and habits, including eating the easy foods first as well as stress eating. Bag of candy? What bag of candy? Oh, the empty one in my trash can? Cake in the fridge at church? Not anymore!

Let's both get serious about addressing our addictions. Others here have offered to help you, and I'm here to do the same. Feel free to friend me. (My name is Erin, by the way.) - Deaterrae
  • Hi Carmen. I'm also addicted to pasta esp velveeta shells and cheese...nomnomnom.

Hi Carmen, I'm Tawni. Nice to meet you. I'm addicted to food in general. My main focus is portion control and not eating any fast or processed foods. Pizza is probably my worst. Good luck on this journey.

    Hey Carmen,
I was in the same situation as you. Totally addicted to carbs. So much so that I'd trade everything else to have bread. I found the only way for me to stop, was to stop cold turkey. I don't have anything white. I started with bread (my weakness) and after a while, i don't miss it. I mean, don't get me wrong, every now and then I crave a bagel or a english muffin, but generally stay away from it. The other thing is, when I do partake in eating carbs, my body just wants to eat more.. I say cut it out for a week and see how it goes.
  • I'm addicted to soda/energy drinks, and fastfood combined with alcohol and sometimes weed..
  • Hi, Carmen, my name is Barb. I too am addicted to wrong carbs...I struggle every day and when I found this app I was excited. This app is really easy to use and I am determined to make this work. Being able to see what carbs/sugar I have left after each meal helps me decide what to eat. Remember to allow yourself to have one sweet per day and then you won't binge or crave the sugar so much. Another thing I do is use measuring cups for portion control.

why dont you just focus on moderation and food choices, instead of cutting things out entirely? i love carbs, i eat whatever i want, just in moderation... must fit into my daily calorie goals. i dont know, to each their own, whatever works for you, but too much restriction doesnt seem good.

Am I late for the Eaters Anonymous meeting?

Hi. I'm an alien and I'm addicted to food. Pretty much all of it. I can't live without it, literally. Mostly my issue has been portion control. For a while I was on the IIFIYM plan (If It Fits In Yo' Mouf!), but that's not so good of a weight loss method. Every day has been a challenge. I have found that the more you work out the less you want to feel bad while doing it, so the diet tends to improve. So, go work out.

Hi Carmen, I'm Alex. For me, it's sweets. So much that I decided to give up sweets for the month of May. Just cold turkey because apparently I struggle with moderation. Almost 1/3 of the way through and I haven't killed anyone yet, so that's gotta be good, right?
