Soups

Do you make your own... or do you buy the canned stuff? I want to try more soups, but I have no idea how to make them and everything I find in the store is okay as far as calories, but the sodium is through the roof! I wanna bring soup to work once in a while... I'm getting tired of my Lean Cuisines.

I make my own. A good and easy place to start is the Good Housekeeping Soup Diet. http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/health/diet/amazing-soup-diet There are several variations on the same soup and I've really enjoyed all of them that I've made. Also check out recipe sites like All Recipes and Recipezaar. I often make a big batch and freeze in smaller portions (either in containers or ziploc bags).0

I love making my own soups, though it's been a while since I've done so. Here are the recipe links I use regularly, though I often just make my own stuff up for soups! Good luck!

I do both canned soups and homemade ones. I do chicken noodle, black bean, tortellini, taco soup, potatoe soup, hamburger stew, and several others , I love making soups. You can find many recipes online, they are easy to make and alot of them are low in calories0

My husband is the real soup maker in the house, but I'm the one that will do the "these veggies are gonna go bad, let's make soup" pot of soup. Easiest thing in the world, this is what you do. The general staple to most veggie based soups is a mirepoix (onions, carrots and celery) chop those up and put them in your pot with a little bit of olive oil to get them browning. Once the onions are softened up a bit you can add your stock. (I really like the low sodium stock from Trader Joe's because it is truly low sodium.) Bring the pot to a boil and let the veggies soften up a bit. If you have a can of diced tomatoes, those give it a nice flavor. Be sure to add your spices, then just start adding whatever veggies you have on hand: zucchini, green beans, corn, whatever you have. You can also add some barley or dried white beans if you want, just make sure you've compensated for your liquid. Just before everything is finished, I like to add some spinach or kale to give it just another great flavor and texture. If you have some left over chicken or turkey, throw that in as well. It's whatever you want to make of it.
Good luck and don't be afraid to experiment. Soup is whatever you want it to be.0 -
i make my own! i make one huge pot and eat it all week!
usually sauté onions, garlic, carrots, celery.... throw in canned green beans, mixed veggis, a can of beans..sometimes kidney/chickpea... etc (all low sodium cans rinsed and drained) and some bulgur wheat sometimes.
sooo gooood, protein carb and hearts veggies. all in one bowl!
last time i also chopped turkey breast meat in. sometimes chicken breast.0
