Why do we say we want to 'lose weight'

Doesn't that imply that we want to recover it. I mean, when I lose my cell phone or car keys, I search endlessly to find them. I have worked hard to 'lose' the weight I have, and am very unhappy when I 'find' it again

I've got a friend who calls it "releasing weight" or "weight release" for that very reason!

I want to look good naked. Weight is irrelevant

Obviously that's code for "be more healthy".

And now we're nitpicking the phrasing. Great.

We say it because saying "we want to loose weight" would be grammatically incorrect. Duh.

WE SHOULD CALL IT "THE JOURNEY TO WEIGHT RELEASE"

actually, there things that are lost that aren't recovered, and have no possibility of recovery. Lost means "gone" regardless of ability or desire to recover it. I have lost my hair. Is it coming back? No. I'm not even certain I would want it to.

The term is fine. Loss, losing, lose, lost - none imply or infer any capacity for return.

From now on I'm BANISHING weight!

Someone who lost a great deal of weight was telling me that whenever someone would ask him how much weight he lost.. he'd say "two pounds" If pressed further, he'd say "yeah, I can't figure out where those two pounds went... the other xx number of pounds I intentionally left at the gym, but those danged two pounds, I have no idea what happened to them"

FINE. We'll keep your husband around for the butch needed in our relationship. He already sleeps on the couch anyway.
