I'm fairly new to the forums. What does "bump" mean?

Basically, if someone posts in a forum like this and they did not get any replies, they say "bump" to bring their post higher in the forum so that others are to still see it and bring it attention n.
For instance, if you did not receive replies on this post, you could reply on it, "bump" and it will bring it to the top of the forum or near the top, rather.
Kind of hard to explain, hope this helps!0 -
That makes sense. Someone just possted "bump" in a thread of mine that had several posts and was pretty active, so that's why I was wondering.
Thanks!0 -
Also, sometimes people do it so it will be on their own list of "My Topics" so they can go back to it later in the day, like if they don't have time to read and respond fully right now.0

Gotcha. that makes sense too

Imagine that thread is a physical object what can be bumped like a soccer ball with head of soccer player. Like a soccer players do with ball, ya know? People who bump threads kicks their monitor with head... that's how I imagine it.0

Interesting. I always took it to mean that someone just liked what they were reading. Kinda like a forum high-five.0

That's awesome and a great secondary meaning. I love it! Officially, it means "I am bumping this to the top of the news feed so other people will see it and it will stay current and popular and so I will have a chance to read more comments as they come in."0

if we "bump" threads so they stay in our list to come back to later, how long will they be there? forever? or will they eventually fall off or go away?0

They fall off0

Every time someone posts in a thread, that becomes the thread at the top of the feed. If someone posts in another thread, that one goes to the top and everything gets pushed down one spot. Eventually, if people post in many other threads and nobody else posts in your thread, it will get pushed to the bottom and eventually not be visible on the main page anymore. That's why, if you personally bump it, it is more likely to stay visible on your own 'My Topics' list, because it's less likely that all the topics in your own list will be commented on to that level.0
