Theres a movie coming to theaters soon called The Purge. Heres the trailer... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0LLaybEuzA
If anyone doesnt want to watch the trailer, this is part of what its about...
Every year there is 12 hours of one day where all emergency personnel are off duty, and anything a person does, they will not be punished for. A person can do whatever they want and get away with it.
My question is what do you think, if this were real, the effects of this would be?
My mom and I were talking about it lastnight and on some level I actually think it could be a good thing. She disagreed. I thought it was interesting so thought Id see what other people think of it.

Ha! I didnt even think of that when I posted this...0 -
The premise that a 12 hour purge would do society that much good seems pretty far fetched to me.0

a guy that watches movies and points out how they're impossible?? you'd be the first to go.0 -

Hah. I think I might have a slight edge over the people who thinks movies are real.
As a thought problem, the concept has some intriguing aspects. I'm not really interested in the movie, from what I saw in the trailer.0 -
Not good. Criminals would not wait for the Purge to be deviant. Didn't buy the kid having access to to disarm their safe house out of compassion for a stranger caught in the mayhem.0

Yeah, I think the idea of an annual purge is what interests me. The movie itself not so much.0 -
Heres my thoughts...
Since its expected, people would do things to protect themselves (like in the movie), but I do not think people would just go out on a killing spree just because its ok for this 12 hours. Most people still have morals and would not end someones life for no reason. The few people who would be ok doing that, would probably do it without an annual purge anyway.
Im a person who believes some things should be 'an eye for an eye'.. so in my opinion, this would be a chance for people who have been badly hurt (ex. family member murdered and person got away with it, rape victim) to get justice... maybe thats weird thinking on my part? I dunno...
Teens would prob be up to shenanigans.
Banks, stores, any place that is holding something valuable would be shut down and protected.
Overall I do not think much would go on though... close enough to a regular day.
eta: Maybe prevent people from wrongdoing others, because they know that person has a chance to do whatever they like back.0 -
I would sit just inside my front door and shoot anyone that came in to do any harm to myself or my property. Other than that, i wouldn't do anything.
But I would pull all of my money out of my bank/IRAs the week before, just in case.0 -

I agree to a large extent. The main problem I see is that innocent blood will be spilled during this spree, whether intentionally or not. People will then either seek revenge or be so traumatized that the overall impact will still be negative.
I don't buy the idea that the collective psyche of society will experience some cathartic release which will benefit everyone in the long run.0 -

Good point. I could definitely see some bank employees taking advantage of the knowledge they are privy to. If this happened every year, I would not ever be using a bank again.0 -
this cud be dangerous.0

I agree that it wouldnt be some sort of huge, societal release.
I disagree that innocent blood would be spilled though. I think overall the blood that is spilt is of those who have done something wrong to people. I could see someone being harmed trying to protect something being robbed from them though (but Id expect theyd take precautions. I dont think innocent people would be a target for angry people to release on though. I think if a stranger did hurt someone for no reason, they probably wouldve done it regardless of some 12 hour free punishment window.0 -

Thats a good point.
What would YOU do if this was real?
When my mom mentioned it to me my first thought was "Well honestly I might be tempted to try robbing a big bank for millions." But ofcourse, thinking it through, I wouldnt.
Which reminds me.... There was a woman whos bank accidently added a few 0s to her balance, turning it to millions, and the woman withdrew all the money and fled country. They were looking for her, but as far as I know still havent found her. The last lead they had was a fb post of hers saying she was by a beach sipping on a drink lol.0 -
I think I would be more interested in seeing who would commit what crime that day.
I don't think this would do much good. I think it would cause a lot of looting, robberies, etc, a lot of damages that would cost the city a lot of money in the long run.0 -

Well Im thinking.. maybe there wouldnt be very many people out to cause havoc for no reason. I wouldnt want to go out t.p.ing a house when there may be other people outside who are ok to do alot worse to any person they se
The looting and robbing... If a purge was expected, Id think people would protect their things and stay inside.0 -
