Can someone please give me definition of what "bump" means on these boards? Thanks! I guess I am old school. Does this mean the person agrees? Too long to read? ???:noway: They do not like?? :indifferent: I have asked this before and I still do not get it, so I am trying to take a poll on others take on the "bump". Thanks and have a good week!

A person 'bumps' a topic to get it into their 'my topics' list or to keep it near the top of the posts because they think its important and want others to see it, too.0

Indeed, cause when something new is posted on a topic it "bumps" to the top of the message boards0 -

ok, thanks!! After about 4 months I finally understand My topics is a way to keep track of replies to your posts.0 -
the history of bump is simply based on the functionality of message boards and electronic bulletin boards. Essentially with boards, when a topic is posted to, it is "refreshed" and shows up at the top of the list again.
Bumping a post mean you don't really have anything to add to the conversation, but would like to keep it near the top for others to see. It's a minor compliment to the poster and (in the case of MFP) can also put the post into your "My Topics" area so it is easier to find later (if you don't have time to read it, or you'd like to keep up with it later.).0 -
Haha, yes, it just means that they want to bring it back to the top of the forum, sometimes because it keeps it in their own "my topics" for easier access. Other times another member may have a question about something that was already covered, and you might remember that thread, so you search for it, and rather than sending the person a link, it's just easier to type "BUMP" in it to bring it to the top for your friend.
For example, now that I'm responding to this, it's in my "My Topics". So if a different friend, we'll call her XYZ, asks me in two months, "What does BUMP mean?" I can go into MY TOPICS, find this thread (because I posted to it), and write "BUMP" at the buttom, and say, "I bumped up a thread about it for you, check it out."
Or, if you posted this question and nobody responded to it, but you still wanted an answer (or just wanted more answers) you would type BUMP to keep it on page one of the forums, so that more people see it.
BTW, if you ever see something like:
tl;dr or TL,DR just tldr (those letters in that order, with or without a comma or semi colon) it means:
too long, didn't read.
(It's rude, IMO, unless the person is saying it about the entire thread rather than an article. I mean, what's the point of coming somewhere just to say you wrote something that's too long??)
So, are you going to write TLDR to my response? LOL0 -
i wThank you mollie for asking this, i have wanted to know what this meant for ages and never got round to asking!
Thank you for all the explanations everyone... now i now what to do!, i've been reading posts and wanting to keep them, but didnt want to be rude and write nothing so lost the topic!! now i know what to do! x x0 -
Yes the other members have it mostly correct.
bump on all message boards is the act of posting nothing relevent to the thread in order to keep it on the front page. When done by others as a compliment or sometimes (and under heavy scrutiny) by the OP (Original Poster) because it didn't get enough attention.
Now on MFP, which doesn't have a subscription feature that almost every message board has*, keeping up to date with your favorite threads involves the archaic method of the user logging on and checking** so when you post "bump" it's you abusing the system to get it into your "My Topics" list so that you can come back to it later.
In message boards without subscription features bumping is usually frowned up.
* trust me, I see a LOT of message boards in my day
* *that is what email notifications and RSS feeds were invented to prevent0 -

Thanks for letting me know what that means. But remember I am the lady who preaches about being positive. I do not have time for rudeness, arrogance, negative comments and posts. I totally ignore negativeness because I don't have the time or engery to expend on it. It is enough to expend on the journey I am on.
So it is my positive rule to totally ignore negative posts. I would never give a person the satisfaction of repsonding to negative posts. If a post is too long to read, do like I do ignore it. That is what I do for emails too long to read. But people do what they feel they must do and I for one am not mad at any of them because we all have choices and mine is to keep it real and remain as focused and positive as possible on this journey we are all on.0 -
Well said mollie!!
Whats an RSS feed ? and why can't people bump it to put it in there feeds to read later?
I dont understand? it seems like common sense to me?0
