I got the gift of time to myself today, on Mothers' Day. My 18-month-old is napping and my wife is out with our 3 1/2 year old. So, instead of taking a nap (which I REALLY wanted to do, and would've done this time last year) or baking (another favorite pastime, which I still love!) I decided today was the day I'd try to RUN... I'm generally afraid of running and very impressed by runners. But I JUST DID IT. I've been working out consistently for a few months, so I thought, "What the hell? I can do this, right??" And then, I ran 5k on the treadmill!!!! At 5mph I won't win any races, but I'm really proud of myself!!!

Now, maybe I'll sneak in a nap before my daughter wakes up from hers!! LOL

Happy Mothers' Day to all of you awesome moms... :)

JessieKanga: Running partners indeed! (Except, I'll have to talk to you about the "mental" part of it all... I definitely *wanted* to stop at around 2 miles... I just kept going, but geez that was tougher than I imagined!)

Ahh yes, the headgame part of it all. Sucks huh? I'm impressed you got to two miles before wanting to quit kicked in. For me it's always the first 10 minutes. At least I get to get them out of the way right out of the gate:).

For me, the treadmill was a crucifier for that. Staring at the clock was a nightmare, and made every second feel like a minute. I would vow not to look, I would change the settings, nothing kept me from staring at it, waiting for the water in the pot to boil. Once I took it outside, running got incredibly easier for me. Now, Natacha loved the treadmill, and found outdoor running a lot harder at first (but now she's got the bug).

There's a C25K group on here. They post about their runs, but they also talk tips and tricks, and one of my favorite threads is a slew of motivational posters. Some of the quotes are very useful at those tough moments. My personal favorite: I about pushing through the moments when your lungs are burning and your legs are hurting... until that gives way to the quiet voice that whispers "I can."

My other thought... you are FAST! I know you work out all the time with the elliptical and walking, and you walk fast... but consider keeping the option to slow down open, even if it's just in those moments that you really want to walk... just slow for a minute, and see if it helps.

Rock on. I was completely amazed when I saw this post since I hadn't see you running for your exercise. That's really quite the accomplishment!!!
