Exercising at 5am?

My new exercise routine isn't really going to workout in the evenings. The only other choice I have is to get up at 5am, the problem is I feel a little unsafe running around the streets by myself when it's dark (the sun doesn't rise until 7am at the moment). A gym is out of the question, we have a park nearby which is normally empty but someone got murdered there a couple of years back! Any tips on how to make myself safer at this time of day?

    Wear bright clothes
Wear a whistle around your neck or have something similar that can make alot of noise
Run in main areas that are usually populated
Carry something such as pepper spray/cellphone/

Maybe don't listen to music so you can hear whats going on around you better.

If you feel unsafe at 5am then don't do it. Can you work out from home or run with someone in the evening?

I am not sure where you live, but here in California you can purchase a bottle of pepper spray and carry it around or the other option is when you run keep your keys between each finger and have them as protection. I don't know how good a whistle would be at 5 am with no body up. I know it might be hard but maybe finding a running buddy.

It's hard, but find a partner to go with you. That may be the best option. Or perhaps a big tough dog. I do know people who run/walk at a mall early in the AM, and they like that because its well lit and others are doing the same thing. Do you have a track nearby that other people use in the morning?

I have a personal alarm that you can wear around your neck or wrist but you know your area the best. Never take chances if you're unsure ... you didn't say why it won't work out for you in the evenings. Is it something you can overcome? (trying not to pry)

Exercise at home, get yourself a treadmill. If its too unsafe to be out by yourself.

Thanks everyone, it's probably not that unsafe but I'm super paranoid! I live in Melbourne and stranger things have happened, people get assaulted here in the middle of the day...

I can easily workout at home but I love to get outside where possible. Maybe I should leave outside for the weekends? I get home late sometimes (after 7pm) and I'm usually so hungry I have to eat, so by the time I've cooked some food, eaten, let it settle it would be after 8pm and I just don't like working out that late, I tend to be awake for hours afterwards!

why not just have a snack at 7, glass of milk/banana/boiled egg/whatever, do your workout and then have your meal afterwards?

i used to live in melbourne. if its in the CBD you should be wary. i think in some of the better suburbs you will be alright. but the issue is the occasional drunk uni kids or other drunk people which may or may not be dangerous. but will be annoying. melbourne has pretty nice roads and traffic is not so crazy. i mean most of the people is driving around 40-50km/h, perhaps get a bike and go to and from work.

Probably not that unsafe but people get assaulted in the middle of the day? If getting assaulted in the middle of the day is your idea of probably not unsafe (basically safe), then you might want to consider moving when you can.

If you can work out at home, then do so. Run outside on the weekends. I don't mean to scare you, but consider your safety from a different perspective. Would you let your 16 year old daughter run at 5am in a park where people get assaulted in the middle of the day? Because I sure as hell wouldn't.

Can you run from work at lunchtime? That's what I do in UK winters when I can't get out before or after work. It does mean I have to have a wet-wipe shower, but I've had no complaints yet!

Or grab a snack before you leave work so it'll be fully digested by the time you get home. Keep bananas in your desk!

If you run somewhere you'd feel safe walking at that time of day, running doesn't make you any more vulnerable, but leave out the headphones to stay fully aware of your surroundings. I tend to run round the block rather than in the park when it's dark.

If you are going to do it, stay on the streets and in populated areas, rather than in a park, or anywhere there won't be any traffic at all - foot or vehicle - at that time of day.

I wouldn't run through a park in the dark at 5am in the morning on a regular basis, thats asking for trouble. find a 24 hour gym or rent a treadmill.

you are increasing your probability of being robbed or attacked. don't do it girl. its sooo better to be safe than sorry.

Have you got a decent sized back garden?
When someone moved into the aprtment below me, I couldn't exactly thump around at 5:30.
I put the "Insanity" work outs on my Ipod so I could get out and train in the open air.
There's typically not much space needed for these DVD type programmes and once you've done a DVD once or twice you know it pretty well so just need the audio cues.
    Worked a treat for me.

8pm isn't that late, I will be out at my martial art class till 9pm, also if you dont have to be up crazy early to fit in a workout you will be better rested, and also you could do a exercise programme like Zuzkalite.com they are only 10 - 20 min and she has a different one everyday, check it out, no excuses!

My wife and I have been doing Tap Out XT every morning we are on day 15 right now. I have found myself more motivated to workout since we have been getting up at 5am six days a week. We don't have time to get to a gym with 3 kids and their activities and running that early in the morning leave them unattended even though they are 12, 13 and 14 I just don't feel comfortable with. So 5am DVD workouts it is. They seem to be working for us. They might work for you, cheaper than going to a gym and safer than running through a park that early in the morning. Or you could get a running partner, because there is safety in numbers. You might even be able to find a running group in your area.
  • Get a dog and some pepper spray!

I would also recommend working out at home if you're going to work out early in the morning. You can also take a long walk during your lunch break to get some sunshine.

I wake up at 5:15 a.m., drink my tea, and work out. I walk to work, walk home for lunch to take our pups out to pee, and then walk back to work. As soon as I get home, I put down my purse, and turn right around to take our dogs out for a nice long walk. This way, I get my heart-thumping, sweaty workout in, but I also get some sunshine!

I've just started Michelle Bridges 12WBT and the workouts seem great, she has home based workouts which I'll give a go for a while, maybe when it starts getting light again I'll head out in the morning. I've never been a morning person but would like to start getting up and working out so I don't have to think about it for the rest of the day!

Slight exaggeration, these things tend to happen in the CBD, I'm in the suburbs (Essendon, VIC) but near a train station where some questionable people are known to hang out. No city is completely safe but it seems all you hear in the news is girls getting assaulted/abducted/robbed/attacked. Media is great for scaremongering and that's really the only reason I feel unsafe.

Generally speaking, the crazies are not out at 5 am, and it is considered a safer time to be outside than 11 p.m. ... when they are out!

I'd do a search for crime and time statistics in your specific area to get a better grasp of your safe windows of opportunity.

I work out super early, too.
