Constipation/ colon flushing

This is not another I want to drink nothing but liquids for 2 weeks to "cleanse" or "detox" my body thread.

Ever since I had my gall bladder taken out almost 2 weeks ago, I've been having a very hard time using the bathroom. I've tried increasing fiber, drinking prune juice, and taking laxatives and stool softeners with very little relief. My husband has to cleanse and empty his colon next week for a colonoscopy and I was wondering if I should do something like that. My hope is that it will allow me to restart the bowel process with an empty colon since I am currently, literally, full of **** (TMI). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Have you had a follow-up with your surgeon since the surgery? It might be a better idea to see what he/she suggests you do. I work with surgeons, and they say to change your diet a little bit, increasing fiber as you mentioned. Maybe the physician will have other options?

Have you talked to your doctor at all? That stuff from the doctor is terrible and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I don't know for sure but there is also a good chance that even cleaning yourself out like that, there could still be an underlying problem and it could come right back. Also, if there is a blockage in there, that stuff can be dangerous...definitely don't do anything like that without talking to your doctor first.

Are you drinking enough water? When you increase your fiber intake, it is important to make sure you are drinking enough water otherwise it won't really help your digestion. I would try drinking more water and maybe taking some Miralax once a day for a couple of weeks and see if that helps (this advice does not apply if you aren't able to go at all...just if you are going but still feel backed up). Miralax is a lot safer than typical laxatives and it is not addictive. If it doesn't help or you are not having anything going on down there, you have to see your doctor. You definitely do not want to mess with your digestive system.

If you are have that much of a problem you should try MiraLax twice a day. I have those problems regularly and my physician suggested I try this. Its mild and I doesn't not cause cramping and it can help you get regular. If when it starts to work cut back to once a day morning/night or every other day.

Talk to a Doctor not the internet especially if you are having problems after surgery.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am able to go sometimes but not nearly enough. My follow up with the surgeon is on Friday so I will definitely ask her. In the meantime I think I'll try the miralax. I actually stopped soda 5 days ago and now only drink water.
