Is a tracker (like FitBit) worth it?

So I'm torn. I'm not sure if I should spend the money to get a tracker, like the FitBit. I want something that will sync to MyFitnessPal, but I've heard mixed reviews. Anyone have any thoughts on if trackers are worth it, and if so, which one(s) do you recommend?

Thanks!

i got the fitbit flex a week ago and i like it. it is a nice tool to have if you need motivation to get up and move. my favorite part of it is the sleep tracking.

I bought the Fitbit Ultra off eBay for $50 because I wondered the same thing. The Ultra is the older version of the FitBit ONE. I love it. I use it solely as a pedometer. It syncs easily with My Fitness Pal and automatically when I have within 15 ft of the computer I have the bottom hooked up to. It's really helped me see how sedentary I am and helps a lot when I travel. I found myself walking circles in an airport to get my 10,000 steps since I didn't have time to work out that day. I use the BMR method and eat back my exercise calories so it really helps in that respect to know how much I burned during the day.

Considered it and have rejected it. My weight loss is tracking at almost exactly a 3500 calorie deficit per pound based on my logged food and exercise. My burn rates are based on the data from my indoor equipment. I do also use a HRM monitor to measure my outdoor activities, including biking, jogging, swimming. So the settings in my MFP profile appear to be correct. So, I spent the $100 or so that would have gone to a FitBit on trailer bikes for my twins so that they can share in the active lifestyle that I've returned to after a long absence. All that being said, I have some friends on MFP who love theirs and it keeps them motivated to hit a desired activity level each day. So, if you think it will help you, I say go for it!
  • Thanks, guys! This is super helpful!

I spent a whole £16 on a heart rate monitor just to see where I'm at with my daily calorie burn. Go for a cheap one with a decent chest strap and you should get enough of an idea without spending hundreds. The syncing bit with mfp really is something you can do without. How hard is it to set calories burnt on HRM to 0 before you workout and then add in the figure after into MFP?
