How to get rid of chunky legs? Please help!

I am a 25 yr old woman. I am 5'3 and weigh about 113 lb. I am pear shaped and my thigh measures 21" even though my waist is only 25".
This is hard to explain or imagine but my legs are muscular and flabby at the same time. I can easily squat my own body weight so I don't lack any muscle there. They are large and thick due to the muscle but covered in a layer of fat so they look untoned. I have accepted I will never have slim legs. But at least how can I get thick muscular toned legs instead of thick muscular flabby legs?
Currently doing new rules of lifting for the last 1.5 months but I've been doing heavy weight lifting for several years now. I've tried taking breaks from it to do Pilates or barre, but they seem to make my legs maybe a tiny bit smaller but still no improvement in looking toned.
I have also lost 5 lb recently from dieting (and continuing my usual strength training) and my thighs are the same size and look the same. Yes, I measured them and took before and after pictures. I even have visible rolls and fat folds when I bend my legs (not the kind that I see on anyone else at a normal weight).
What else can I try? Or do I have to get down to 90 lb or some other ridiculously low weight to see them not so flabby?

I would not recommend you get down to 90lbs. 113lbs at 5'3" is small enough.
The first thing to do is look at your diet. Are you eating a lot of fatty foods?
I would recommend you try doing hills on the treadmill. Also try the stair climber. Another great leg exercise is lunges.
Lastly, not all of us can have those nice defined legs. Genetics might be in play here so consider that as well.0 -
I eat pretty healthily. I rarely eat fried or junk foods. I don't avoid things like avocado or olive oil but I don't eat them everyday.
I don't need supermodel legs but I can't imagine I am stuck with rolls and folds on my legs when I'm at my current weight. I'm not the most lean person ever but I don't have abnormal folds and rolls anywhere else on my body. It's like my legs don't even match my body.
Also, I already do step ups and lunges. I have been doing weight lifting for years so I've tried all the compound moves. Haven't tried the treadmill. Would running help to strip the fat?0 -
Your not gonna want to hear this, but again no way to spot reduce. Everyone stores fat a bit differently, and it seems like your body likes to put it on your lower torso (be happy, I rather have big legs then have stubborn fat on the gut).
Keep cutting and no its not "too skinny" till those fat rolls are gone. Keep up your deficits. It WILL eventually go off (although may be the last spots to leave).0 -
I'm 5'8" and around 280. I have been working out for about 2 months now at a gym. My legs have really slimmed down and this is what I'm doing. Don't know if it will help you or not. Quick warm up on the treadmill, Hip adduction (40 reps on 40 and 60 reps on 50) Hip abduction (same reps) then the stationary bike for 45 minutes. My legs are noticably different and I couldn't be happier with the results0

I've had the same peoblem all my life. This time I tried losing a lot of weight and went to the underweight category(that's how much I hated my legs). I'm still not very happy about them, but as I'm not willing to go any lower I started working out and lost about 1 inch off my hips in more than one month. My weight stayed the same, but their shape is better/more toned.
If you look at my profile pic you'll see a 5'9"/120lbs pear shape with ok legs, but I would't recommend doing what I did to anyone. I don't think I'll be able to sustain this look for too long(just until my wedding) + not very healthy. For me it was an old dream of having my highschool legs back that I needed to come true, but soon I must grow up and accept genetics.0 -

It never ceases to amaze me how much women obsess over their legs. Us guys really don't give a hoot, in fact you'll see a lot of chicken leg guys at the gym who refuse to squat.
I'm sure your fiance wont mind either Congrats on the loss. Btw that overweight / underweight is a complete pile of ___. A BF% is much more telling. The lower end of the "normal" (before bb range) is around 17-18%. Aim for that and stop there if you are comfortable.0 -
Have you always been small? could it be excess skin?0
-
Yes I've always been on the smaller side. When I was 118 a few months ago that was the heaviest I have been in my life. I am pretty sure it is not excess skin. It feels like fat if I pinch it.0

squats and deadlifts
with a heavy barbell (heavy = you can't lift it more than about 8 times)

there are a lot of before and after pics in these threads, of women who took up heavy lifting so you can see how much it improves the shape of not just the legs but the whole body0 -
I already do squats and dead lifts and have been for years. I can squat my own body weight.
It has helped me gain a lot of leg muscle (not something I particularly like) but has done nothing in helping my legs look more toned.0 -

what lifting routines have you been doing, and how have you been eating?0 -
I mentioned in OP I'm doing new rules of lifting right now.
I have done that routine before and other similar types (full body heavy weights with compound movements). I have also done crossfit here and there. Been weight lifting since I was 21. I've taken some couple month breaks here and there to try new things but I always go back because I like doing it. The only problem is it isn't looking good for my thighs.
Usually eat pretty healthy. Most of my meals revolve around serving of protein with vegetables on side. Don't eat dairy. I still will eat things like bread pasta sweets but they're more a treat not for everyday. Drink maybe 2 alcohol drinks per week on average. Otherwise only water.
I don't think my diet is the problem though. I lost 5 lb recently with dieting.0 -
Kettlebells have helped me a lot...also lots of running.
If you're loaded and get desperate, look into ultrasonic cavitation. I get it on my love handles and it helps quite a bit, but it's expensive if you don't have a Groupon or something.0 -
I'm a fan of kettle bells too but I've never done them for a long period of time.
I truly hate running but I guess if that's what it's going to take I'll do it. How long and how often? Steady state or intervals?0 -

[edit - because the post I was replying to was edited] - if you're successfully losing just fat (not lean mass) and you really do still have stubborn fat, then you just need to lose a little more with a *very* conservative deficit (no more than 0.5lb a week/10% deficit) until it's gone...
However, given that you're already very slim, is your own assessment of how your legs look accurate? A lot of very beautiful women have great legs but think they look lumpy and ugly when they don't..... 21" thighs are not huge, they's slim. You say you have a small frame, so they seem big... maybe... but maybe that's your own perception of your legs, and others would not agree. Have you posted pictures to get an outside opinion? I really don't see how your legs could be carrying that much fat if you're already so slim and you're also doing a decent amount of training to work the legs (weights, crossfit, etc). Maybe you're a pear shape, i.e. thighs are the last place you lose fat from, but I have seen a lot of pear shaped women with great legs who still have some "saddlebag" fat on them.... or maybe you're over-focusing on a tiny bit of fat that no-one else even notices.0 -
I guess I just have to continue losing weight. I imagine I am losing a little muscle but trying my best to preserve it with lifting still. It's just that it is so hard for me to lose weight with my current weight. It took months to lose 5 pounds.
I do think I have an accurate idea of what my legs look like. The folds and rolls were the first giveaway, lol.
Also I honestly asked my family and they admitted my legs don't look like they belong...
I'm not that concerned with their size so much. Yes they are too big for my body but I can't do much about having naturally thicker legs. But I figure I can at least hope for toned thick legs?0 -
women under 50 perfer to store fat on the legs and behind and men prefer to store it on their "beer" belly.
Its because a woman's body wants to keep fat away from the womb area as much as possible do that it does not cause issues when reproducing.
This is the same reason men get moobs. When they get too much visceral fat estrogen is produced in the body which widens the hips and sends fat to the moob area (like a woman) to try and stop it crushing the organs.0 -
Yes but I am not overweight and never have been. I don't think my body would feel in danger of crushing my organs at this point?
Just like how typically normal weight men don't usually get moobs.0 -
Zumba! It works all the leg muscles so no one muscle is going to get bigger than another. Since doing zumba and toning exercises - lateral leg lifts etc. my legs are really toned but not bulky - I'm not building muscle, what i have is stronger and the fat on the top is slowly disappearing.
The tummy is going to take a lot longer, but the legs are doing quite well!:happy:0 -

your family are probably not the best people to get opinions from.
Maybe post pics in one of the private groups if you don't want to post them publicly. I refuse to believe that you have "folds and rolls" at such a light weight, with 21" thighs and already doing strength training and you can squat your bodyweight.... honestly it really does sound like your perception of your legs is skewed. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/10118-eat-train-progress this group is good, full of people who are very knowledgable, in fact you can join and get good advice on this issue even if you don't want to post any pics of yourself for a 2nd opinion re what your legs are like (but I really do think you need an outside opinion regarding your legs)...
ETA: if you're right and I'm wrong about your legs, they will be able to tell you how to fix it, e.g. lowering your body fat percentage or whatever you need to do..... and if I'm right and your legs look way better than you think, they'll tell you that.0 -
Since I started cycling to work, my legs have mostly firmed up (I still have weight to lose so there are a few flabby bits left yet) and the cellulite is improved beyond all my expectations. I only cycle around 5 miles a day too.0
-
This might sound like a silly idea, but I have heard that tap dancing will work your leg, and it's cardio too, so your legs get toned. It can't hurt!0
-
The folds and rolls are around my knees. And also when I bend my legs my thigh gets a couple folds. I have seen the same folds on other overweight women.
Also my thighs chafe so much I have to apply special cream during summer if I wear a skirt or dress. I don't think I have to post pics, haha.0 -
It seems like the answer might be more cardio and continuing to lose weight via dieting.0

I have to obsess about something. If I have no boobs only legs remain to obsess about; 1 out of 2 is close enough.0 -

I totally understand where you are coming from, I have lost a fair bit of weight, but my thighs have always and continue to be out of proportion to the rest of me, I have to buy certain cuts of pants and they are always way too big around the butt and waist to fit my thigh, else they are very tight and look even worse!
I have been doing weights in a class so the muscles are definitely under there, but I need to get rid of the fat layer, mostly around the top and inner thigh.. running is helping, but it is slow going.
Good luck!!0 -
I'm exactly the same shape and have had chunky legs all my life, even when I was also 'underweight' for my height, at 114 lbs -I'm 5'4. I can tell you for sure that when you're pear shaped, your legs are the last place the fat goes from...we lose it from the head down! Apple shapes tend to lose it more from their slimmer arms and legs, when they want to lose it more from the middle....!
But there was one time when my legs looked really good, and they were very, very firm. At the time, I was following a basic workout in a gym, but was given whole body exercises that also worked my legs a lot. I was skipping (this really helped) and did a lot of pulley exercises, like standing on one leg, attaching the pulley to the other and swinging out to the sides, particularly working the inside leg muscles. I was also doing a lot of floor exercises, like lying on your back and doing scissor movements with the legs, where you let your legs swing out to the side and bring them in again, and at the same time moving them down towards the floor and back up again, so that they're at right angles from your waist.
The other thing I was doing was using a trampoline, also really worked everything. I was using an olympic sized trampoline every day, but even using one of those mini jogger types still works all the leg muscles. Someone mentioned cycling: I'm afraid that I used to cycle 20 miles a day, commuting into the city, and it only toned up my calves, didn't really do anything for my thighs, even though I'd hoped it would.
Finally, jogging was another exercise that really seemed to help tone up the flabby thighs and bottom!
I hope this helps.0 -
you sound like you are built beautifully try more protein to cut the fat less carbs and look at yourself differently. i know how you feel i have 21 inch thighs 27 inch waist weigh 58 kilos and cant for the life of me lose the doona cover on my thighs. i am 63 and squat and lunge heaps try doing interval runs one minute flat out and one minute for recovery. i probably wont ever lose the bit of fat covering my legs but im sure if you are much younger than me you will in time . but i would love to have a 25 inch waist. I do have very good abs and shoulders for an oldie though0

I have a similar issue as I am only 5'4 and have very muscular legs from years of gymnastics as a child and teenager but now have a thick layer of fat on top. I am going to carry on with the weight loss and then maybe 40 lbs down the line I may consider lipo to finish me off.0

ill have your legs! mine are 24'' at 5''4 in height and my waist is 26.5!0
