Calorie Intake & Myfitnesspal

Just had a small question I was hoping someone might be able to help me better understand on this site.

I've just started my mission to lose weight and get back into shape a few weeks ago, so far so amazing. I'm recording my meals accurately and diligently, and also tracking my exercise accordingly. I'm going to the gym 5 times a week, generally for an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. I'll break the routine down on a list so its easier to read...

Gym
-Treadmill: 20 minutes, around 8 jogging and the rest walking
-Elliptical: 20 minutes constant brisk pace
-Strength training for whatever is on the schedule that day, usually 4 different workouts, each with 5 sets of 15 of moderate to heavy weights.

After that I take a walk for 45-60 minutes.

I currently weigh 258 and am 6'2".

Myfitnesspal has me eating 1700 on any day without additional work out. When I add in my workout, in generally jumps to around 2200~, which to a person like me whose wanting to lose weight and knows little-to-nothing about calorie intake that number SEEMS a bit scary.

Should I be aiming to meet the goals (with the stipulation that everything I've been entering is completely accurate) that Myfitnesspal is setting for me? Or what?

Sidenote:: For the most part I've been aiming to stay inside of ALL the goals set by Myfitnesspal, such as carbs, sodium, sugar and fat.

The calories sound reasonable to me. You could eat the 2200 calories for a month or two and if you are not seeing the weight loss you are looking for then you could drop as low as the 1700 if you wanted to. Or you could just look at it as a range to stay between the 1700 and 2200. I have been at your weight before and those calorie figures both seem like they could work for you.

Sweet, thanks for replying, its a bit of a relief to here a similar circumstance, too!

just wasn't sure if I'd be harming my progression by eating to little, etc. Need this to get this train running!
