tire flipping

I obtained a large tire, something one would see on a medium sized, off road front end loader used at a construction site. Near as I can determine on my bathroom digital scale it weighs 225 pounds. It's about 4.5 feet tall, 20" off the ground when laying flat.

Having seen this used by MMA fighter gyms and in a recent article in a popular Men's Fitness magazine as a good 'power' excercise I incorporated into my weekly plan.

About three times a week I now flip this tire around my backyard. It really works me out, eveything from my hands/grip, forearms, quads, glutes, core/hips, and shoulders. After 20 minutes I am sweating profusely. I 'feel' the workout three hours later.

Otherwise I live a sedate lifestyle. This tire flipping drill reminds me of when I labored for a living. It feels good!

You & my brother could work out together. He has a 600 lb tire, too ( he does Strongman competitions & stuff so he has all the crazy gear). Enjoy!

I totally agree that no matter how "gym fit" one gets, it's often this kind of thing that really gets one's cardio vascular system going like no other. Rocks, sacks of sand.. lots of different objects that can be used for, for example, carrying over one's head back and forwards the length of a section or whatever. Your tire one is a great idea.

Now go one step further and buy a 2.5 or 5 pound sledge hammer and pound the tire it really gives the back, shoulders, and arms another work out.
  • That is my plan for the winter months when snow covers the ground (I'm in Michigan). I have room in my garage and I intend to beat this tire with a sledgehammer. Back in my youth I made my living for awhile swinging a spike maul on a railroad contruction crew (yes, I was a 'gandy dancer'). Having spent the last 30+ years of high stress and being responsible for other people's actions I miss that simple life of grunt labor! It will do me good to experience it again.

Got me a tire. Monday is the day, 40 min of cardio, 200 lb tire, 8 pound sledge, me, rinse and repeat. My "source" has all tires I will ever need. Hope to trade up soon.

Sounds like a lot of fun to me! Don't think I quite have the space in my 500 sq ft. apartment though. I have often thought of getting a construction or labor side job just for the lifting benefits.

Strongman training has really been the be all end all for workouts for me. I've got a 200lb tire for dragging and throwing, a 600lb tire for tire flipping, and a 1000lb tire at a buddies for flipping. If you can flip that tire 20 times in a row, it's time to graduate. I train strongman 2 times a week at least, tire flipping, atlas stones, farmers carry, yoke walk, car pull/push. Instead of having to work on all compound movements and THEN cardio...this type of workout hits cardiovascular AND strength all in one. A lot of people won't break from the norm and get outside of their 24 hour fitness memberships to see that the world outside has so much to offer. I do however miss the swimming pool and steam room of 24 hr fitness. So nice. I plan on competing in a lower weight class next summer. Add me as friends, can exchange workout ideas.

Great idea the tire thing, but I live in downtown Tokyo, so I would be hard pressed to find the space to do it :grumble:

The sledge sounds good too, I grew up in Canada, and I split a LOT of wood with a splitting maul, that sure is a good work out, but then again so was felling the trees and then stacking the wood.

I do have my own work out, I load up the trailer I built to tow behind my MTB and I do my deliveries around town, we run a liquor shop, sometimes I have over 150 lbs of beer on that thing, let me tell you that is a work out
