Ok, so I have been running for like 2 years now (whoohoo) but this summer my mouth has been super mucusy. I find that I have to spit it out on my runs. I have never had to do this before. It would be one thing if it was like this from the begining but it is not till this year. Is this some random thing or could be be connected to allergies or lack of water?!?! It is just gross.

You may take some relief in knowing that it's not a rare thing, a lot of people get this.. your body doesn't hate you or anything!
It can often be linked to allergies like hayfever, you may find yourself more susceptible to pollen etc when running simply as you're breathing in heavily and regularly and your body is reacting adversely to it.
Drinking plenty of water prior to, during and after your run will help stem the problem quite a lot... but yeah, it's nothing to worry about, just an annoyance! Try and avoid anything like milk before you run too, since that makes your mouth gooey to begin with!
You may also find it's less of a problem if you slow your pace a little.0 -
The only thing I've found that helps at all is to brush my teeth and use mouthwash right before I go running. It seems to help produce extra saliva to wash that glob of mucous down! Even swigging water during a run doesn't help. I've tried gum and candies and it just makes a sweet glob to spit although I have to admit I'm quit proud of my new found spitting skills.0

Si Si. When I jog in the mornings, I get extreamly "mucousy"... For me, it's a mixture of allergies, plus it's in the morning when the pollen spores and stuff are their most potent, plus I'm breathing super heavy which is mixing everything around in my lungs... So yeah, I get that too. It's not so much a mouth/spit thing as it is a congested, then cough, then "oh man, I gotta spit" thing.0

Yeah, I was going to say allergies too. Maybe try a Claritin or something before your run.
Brenda_Pancakes, I love your name!0 -
I dont have allergies and it happens when I dont drink enough water!0

I have the same issue and it makes me crazy.0

If your adrenaline is up when you run, that can cause this too. One of the many things adrenaline does is clear out your sinuses - so if you have a bit more fluid in your head at this time of year due to seasonal allergies and you introduce adrenaline into the system, this can happen.
I personally don't tend to feel much adrenaline on training runs, but I definitely notice it on race days. Have you been pushing yourself harder or anything recently?0 -
Me too. On race days I take a sudafed about an hour before race time. On training runs, Ijust hack & spit.0

I get this on occasion as well. I am pretty sure its not allergies for me but its certainly a possibility.0

Try a drop of OREGANO oil.. yes oregano oil.. you can get it at the health food store it comes in a small vial w a dropper.. Squeeze just a drop or two into half a glass of water every two hours through the day time... Oregano has many qualities one in which is that it's a natural dehydrant sooooo it clears up runny noses, head colds and mucous fluids... :flowerforyou:0

I get this and I've never even considered the cause (just thought it was par for the course I guess). I just use it to see how far I can hock it. On windy days (I live way out in the country and I'm on my own property), I think I've gotten almost thirty yards if I angle it right.
Now I want to know who else gets those gross little yellow balls in their throat?
(I know, I'm gross)0 -

I don't have a solution, but I can say I am just like you. I started running almost 2 years ago, when i started out I use to run with some co-workers at lunch and they would all spit, I thought it was weird and I had not desire or need to...fast forward a year and in the colder weather (so far not in the heat) I had the same issue, but never did get good at the spitting without hitting my own shoulder :grumble:0
