Tasty Low Calorie Ice Cream

Ice cream is my weakness. I love both chocolate and vanilla especially with nuts or peanut butter. I see low calorie options at the store but am wondering how good they actually taste.
Any suggestions?

I recently tried the skinny cow brand of ice cream, and I think it tastes very good. Good luck to you

Skinny Cow is strangely cooperative in this regard.

    skinny cow IS delicious.

Surprisingly, so is Blue Bunny - no sugar added. I just picked up the banana split and it's amazing!

Pick a low fat ice cream of your choice and fill a half cup measure for 120 cals. That sounds like nothing and a half cup measuring cup looks laughably small but when you transfer it to a bowl, it is quite enough. I have a date every night with Friendly's Pistachio....

I agree with all the skinny cow suggestions, although recently I've started to catch a hint of preservative or chemical flavor in what I've eaten. I also like Edy's slow churned. I've also found that portion is everything. If there's one flavor that you just can't live with out, fit it into your macros, and just be sure to scoop it out onto your food scale so you're sure only to have one serving. Ice cream is one of those things that a small amount of the quality stuff is going to quench your craving a lot better than even a large amount of the low calorie replacement stuff (IMO)

I love Edy's Slow Churned when I need a lower calorie option. I like the yogurt blend caramel praline right now, it's 120 calories per half cup.

I live in Japan but in 7/11s here they have 87 calorie mint chocolate chip ice cream pops that taste delicious. It's 7/11 brand so I'm sure the stores in other countries have them as well.

Otherwise, I really love frozen yogurt. Even tofu or soy ice cream cuts a lot of calories (and I personally prefer the taste most of the time).

Doesn't Skinny Cow taste like chemicals to anyone else? I tried one of their ice cream sandwiches at someone else's house and didn't know what brand it was until after I tried it . . . it tasted like cardboard and chemicals to me :-/

mix greek yogurt (i use chobani plain fatfree)
with a banana favorite flavor protein powder (I use chocolate and this has only been tested on chocolate) and cinnamon spun honey. and put in the freezer for a bit.. (is also good without the protein powder)

it's utterly amazing.. like dessert.. and so healthy.. omgggggggg i want some now!! (but i FORGOT to buy yogurt at the store today.. DOH!)

p.s. add some whole milk and you've got a smoothie that packs 40ish grams of protein. mmmmm

I love the skinny cow ice cream sandwiches but what I often do is freeze a banana (peeled) and then stick it in my Ninja (processor). its just like soft icecream!! its so yummy & some times I add mini chocolate chips or nuts. Its a real treat!

I have found, that if I am going to indulge in ice cream, I want good yummy kind... And just fit in in my macros somehow. I dont want to waste calories on something like that if I dont REALLY enjoy it.

That being said.. I really like Talenti Gelato. Its like 190 cals for a 1/2 cup and 1/3 less fat than full flavored ice cream.. and its all natural.. it is YUM.

I'm in the UK and have a Solero Exotic lolly which is vanilla icecream covered in tropical fruit coating for 94 cals or a Del Monte raspberry icecream smoothie bar for 84cals. They do a mango smoothie one too. Skinny cow tastes too artificial for me.
  • Another vote for skinny cow, it's amazing

I really like Garant brand ice cream, the vanilla and the strawberry are delicious and only 190 calories for 100 grams. The crushed chocolate is 230 calories I think, but I didn't like it as much as the others so I don't really remember.

I don't think that brand exists outside Sweden though. At least not for ice cream.

Totally agree with this. I was looking at the Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches at Costco a few months ago, but I couldn't get past the ingredients list. Two local ice cream makers (University of Wisconsin Babcock Hall and the Chocolate Shoppe) make fantastic ice cream. The calories for 1/2 cup (as weighed) are about 230, IIRC, not significantly higher than the reduced calorie brands. Another local dairy, Sassy Cow, makes ice cream that is 170 calories for half a cup. Theirs is not quite as good as Babcock or Chocolate Shoppe, but it's still yummy, and the milk it's made from is local.

    Three things.
    1) Skinny Cow is delicious.
    2) They make Snickerdoodle sandwiches? I must find them!
    3) The Talenti gelato is AMAZING. My only problem is other people eating it before I get it.

I just buy a store brand mini ice cream sandwiches. They are about 100 calories and you don't have to worry about scooping the right amount of ice cream..... That right there is my problem, a half cup of ice cream does not satisfy me! Although it probably doesn't help that I like the fully loaded ice creams like Ben & Jerry's half baked either.

I think that's probably true for most people. Even before I started monitoring my calories on MFP, ice cream was not a problem food for me (I have others). I like it (and lately love it), but just in smaller quantities. For instance, I've never gotten a waffle cone. That much ice cream would not sit well with me. And, after a short love affair with Cherry Garcia and Chunky Monkey, i've never liked Ben and Jerry's. Too much butterfat, I think.

The low calorie 'churned' kind is very icy and has a weird texture and as I've read, very genetically modified if that is one of your concerns. Usually there are loads of extra ingredients in brands like skinny cow. If you want a 'true ice cream experience' I think you should fit it into your diary and indulge. You will probably be more satisfied in the long run. :)

Only 30 calories. 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 2tsp PB2, a splash of torani sugar free vanilla, and some splenda.

    These are my opinioins
    1) Don't buy it at the supermaket and take the no-milk flavours...
    2) Probably the fruit flavours and the extra-dark choccolate could have no milk or just a little... so they are lower in cals.
    3) Don't avoid the nuts flavours cause they are higer in healty fats.
    4) handmade ice-cream could be a " GOOD-CHEAT " ( it won't effect cause usually has no more than 400 cals)
    5) enjoy it !!
I always take dark-chocolate and pistachio (chocolate 85% made only with cocoa and water)

PS. if the ice cream melts FAST it is higer in FATS xD
