What makes a good veggie, alcohol-free Sunday lunch?

An old friend is coming to stay next weekend and I'd like to cook her a nice Sunday lunch. However, as a wine-loving carnivore, I'm at a complete loss as to what to serve a vegetarian teetotaller to eat and drink. Any ideas?

some sort of nut roast? You can get packet / ready / frozen in most supermarkets, and it is quite tasty, even for us omnivores

How about Elderflower cordial, the sparkling sometimes comes in poncey Champagne style bottles, and once more is quite tasty even for us boozers

PS, do roasted veggies with it, great stuff

    No Bisto gravy though ;-(

My mum uses a Delia curried nut roast recipe. Personally I very much appreciate some form of protein in a meal, which some people don't seem to consider if you're veggie. I've had many a yummy veggie lasagne at friends' houses over the years too.

    Yes, everything but the meat.

Not that I'm planning to serve it, but just out of interest, do vegetarians eat fish eggs, i.e. roe or taramasalata? Don;t see why not!

Vegans don't eat poultry eggs, dairy, etc. Vegetarians generally do. However, as fish eggs are collected when the fish is killed, I suspect that would be pushing the boundary for sure.

depends on them really, some are very radical and vegan, will not wear leather items for instance, or eat cheese, drink milk, [you have to remove the calf from the cow to keep the cow giving milk]

some like Linda Mc, will eat nothing with a face / eyes

Eggs / roe goodness knows, eggs / roe are really unborn creatures, so who can say? Bit like the abortion debate, where does it all start? Steer well clear is my advice

It is a minefield for us omnivores, I would tend to play safe given an old friend, and avoid anything linked with animals or living creatures

Many foods do have a vegetarian friendly logo on the them, I think it is a green tick like V

If it's nice out and you want to BBQ, you can throw on some portabello mushrooms or eggplant and grill those or do veggie skewers. Delicious!

Or you can do salads with tons of different toppings, roasted veggies, pastas or pasta salads with no meat, lentil soup, tofu stir fry with veggies, endless really. Just google some recipes on line. You'll have more than enough to choose from.

As above, I think you will find, unlike the stereo type of brown lentils and sandals, that vegetarian food is really very tasty in the main, for an omnivore it does of course need a bit of research, but you never know, you may get to like it and mostly requires no more prep time than omnivore meal

A word of warning, Qourn, seems a good veggie choice, but unless you know for certain your friend is Ok with it do not serve it.

It makes both me & my grandson vomit within hours of eating it, be careful, would hate for the day to end in the toilet

Morningstar Farms Veggie Burgers, chik strips, meatless bacon are all Wonderful....there's so many different ones to choose from. Amy's frozen meals are Awesome, a bit pricey but purchasing once or twice isn't bad. Tofutti frozen desserts are so-so. Buy fresh or frozen berries to have on hand to top with plain angelfood cake. There's awhole new world out there with Vegetarian Foods, more so now then back in the early 1990's. Don't stress about it all will go well  Wait for your friend to arrive & go to the grocery store together if she's up for it. Good Luck and Have Fun with your visit!
