Running with music is it healthy

Hi I'm new to running trying my best to lose weight, I've seen a lot of people having their mp3 around when they starts jogging. I'm wondering listening to music while you jog is it healthy or is there any use in it . Need some advice

I personally find that having upbeat music keeps me going and helps me have a better rhythm when jogging, its all in your preference though!

If it causes you to be unsafe or unaware of your surroundings, then no!

But if you are aware of your surroundings and it keeps you motivated, do what works for you!

Most people can't hear my Prius come up on them without headphones...... I love music but if you are on the street only use one earbud, safer that way.

It can be dangerous running with earplugs in, because you can't always hear what it going on around you. A jogger in Dallas was killed by a cyclist last year because she didn't hear him call out when he was passing, and she turned in front of him. I would only wear one earplug if you must have music. I personally don't ride with earplugs, so I can hear cars coming up.
  • I always jog with one earbud out. I use a bike path that gets a lot of use and I need to hear if someone is coming up behind me. I think the only issue would be tuning out your surroundings.

Not sure why it would be "healthy" but I like to listen to music when I run to distract me and motivate me to push harder. It also can get boring running long distances so music helps keep it fun :) I would recommend it.

Music is a good distraction from what you are doing so I say it is a good thing.

I'd be interested to see the results of people overall who use MP3 players or phones regularly, on a ear audibility test. Up to 59% of people listen to their portable music players on the upper levels.

I run at parks and I listen to my mp3 loud. It helps me stay at a pace, you breathe easier (because your not concentrating to much on it), run farther, and not bore me to death! So not a problem here!

I cannot exercise without music. I'm not sure if it's habit or because I have ADD, but if I don't have music to keep my mind occupied I can't get into my workout. I run with a playlist of my favorite songs (some upbeat and some not). I live in a really safe neighborhood (never a locked door kind of place), so I'm fine. But even when I run in town or someplace I else, I listen to my music, loud. It would be unfortunate if something happened to me, but hey, you gotta die some way right?

My only problem with music is that I can not exercise without it, especially at the gym. If I forget my phone I literally drive home and get it. BLAH...

With that said I work out so much harder because I am more focused with music. Every little noise at the gym annoys me or distracts me and decreases my effort, with ear buds on I just focus on the exercise...and the song.

Really depends on where youre running; and remember the volume should not be over 85 db. I now have the pleasure of wearing $5,280.00 digital hearing aids! HUH? Do what? Uh repeat that? Beg pardon?

Maybe the OP meant is it "safe," which is certainly a valid question.

Music has been proven to help people perform harder.

Personally, I don't run with music as I tend to run in the Vegas desert. I like the whole "no civilization" theme. :)
