2 days quarter of your daily calories 'fast days' and the other days just eat normal, just out of curiosity really Im quite happy with what Im doing at the minute. Does it work? what is your mood like on those fast days? etc..

I regularly do a 24h fast and then eat 500 cals. Works well for me if i've over indulged or just want to give my body a bit of a break. Mood wise it kinda makes me trip out a bit.0

I am doing it, recently started it. The first time I did it was just after Christmas but was going from eating lots to eating nothing and I found it very difficult to manage on fast days, so I had to drop it. But I was losing weight...
This time I went on a calorie controlled diet for about 1 month before starting the fast diet and I'm finding the fast days much easier as its not so much of a drop.
Hunger comes and goes rather than builds, so it's just about getting your head down and keeping busy til it passes. I can be a little moody though - but that's more through anger that people around me can eat and I can't.
I'd suggest watching the Horizon documentary by Michael Mosley, interesting research in that. Should be available to watch online somewhere!0 -
I did alternate day intermittent fasting for weight loss, which is a stricter version of the 5:2 plan. I tried doing 5:2 for maintenance, but kept losing weight so I had to stop Now I'm experimenting with 8/16 IF. There's a 5:2 group on mfp, as well as a general IF group-check them out!0

I do 5:2, great for me.
Especially after a weekend of over indulgence! A fast day really helps get you back on track!
I have a few friends on here that also do it and they also love it!0 -

Not always. Does work wonders though. Kind of like hitting reset. Otherwise i normally do it on a day that im not working it out. It just makes me feel good. I don't really get moody0 -

I've been doing the "fast diet" (more commonly known as "5:2" on here) for 16 weeks (fast #33 today).
It works a treat for weight loss (39lbs so far), and supposedly has other health benefits too (though many would argue they are as yet unproven).
I personally haven't noticed any real physical problems (tiredness, headaches etc.) on fasting days, but some others do report them.
At first, I found I was going to bed early on fasting days, but that was in an attempt to get the day over with and remove the temptation to eat more! That soon passed though, and now I barely notice the fast days. If I feel hungry, I drink a pint of water and give it half an hour - the pangs go away quickly enough,0 -

I stop eating after dinner the day before a fast day, about 6pm, then I don't eat till after 6pm the following day.
So far as I know there is no formula for it, but would be good to get other peoples take on it...0 -
If at the end of this math equation there is a deficit, then yes, it will work.0

Personally, I eat two 300Cal meals - lunch and dinner - on fast days. Nothing else. So I basically fast for 16 hours, eat, 'fast' for 6 hours, eat, and then fast for 15 hours.
I believe that the recommendation for the health benefits is to try to go as long as possible between meals if you can, so that would be to eat one meal on your fast day, but I couldn't do that. I settled on 2 meals instead of, say, grazing small amounts throughout the day. Some people prefer that, and in weight loss terms it doesn't matter a jot. Only for those claimed health benefits...0 -

The original concept is a calendar day, so have dinner on Day 0, then have 500-600 cals on the Fast Day (Day 1) then a normal breakfast on Day 2. Many people eat their calorie allowance as a single meal - dinner on Day 1.0 -

I have been doing 5:2 fasing for 5 weeks. I eat 500 calories/day for 2 nonconsecutive days a week. I drink a lot of water and decaf tea on fast days. I don't eat from the night before until the day after the next day. Since doing this I am satified with smaller portions on my feast days, I just can't eat what I used to. I lost inches from my belly and 8 lbs. It is definatley working for me. I powerwalk every day for 3-4 miles and do it while fasting also. You aren't really fasting. 500 calories is enough to sustain you while working out.
Last week I ate 1500-2000 calories on my feast days
The previous week I ate 1700-2400 calories on feast days
I eat whatever I want and log it just to see how much I am eating. It's fascinating to learn that my intake has naturally gone down so much!

Tread cautiously. Fasting has been around for thousands of years, and both the pros and come sides of the fasting arguments have good truths as well as loads of BS.
First off, no one should fast for longer than 48hrs at a time. Starvation mode is not a myth, it just takes longer to get to that point than people think.
If you have great self-control, then awesome...but if not, it's quite common for people to have bad binges after fasting, and a good chunk of people gain back all the weight that they lost from fasting...but like I said, if you possess good self-control you shouldn't have to worry.
It's possible that you'll experience nausea, moodiness, dizziness, constipation, etc etc. All of that stuff depends on the individual.
Prolonged fasting can cause your metabolism to slow because your body is conserving energy, and once you hit that point of the slowing metabolism and muscle disintegration, you could be heading to a world of hurt-but you'd have to eat nothing for awhile.
Of course it's always smart to consult with your doc before trying something like this. You may not like what you hear, because most doctors discourage fasting. It's dangerous that you may love the weight-loss a bit too much and end up full blown anorexic. At that point, of going too long without eating, you can suffer severe electrolyte imbalances, kidney failure, gallstones, liver failure, coma, and yes, death. I, myself, am a recovering Anorexic. I was institutionalized at 16 for a period of time and suffered a relapse when I was 18. It took time for my metabolism to recover, I lost virtually all of my muscle, grew a thin layer of hair all over my body, could not grow nails or my hair out due to the brittleness, and to this day I get kidney and liver screenings regularly and I might have 2 to 3 periods a year if I'm lucky.

Good luck! Just be careful with it, and make sure you're healthy. Some people should never ever fast; anemics, AIDS patients, cancer patients, women at risk of pregnancy, diabetics, people with kidney conditions or liver conditions (including heavy drinkers), and people who take certain prescription drugs.
Keep in mind, the people who die from prolonged fasting, or who just have a hard time and struggle during their fast, are those who are in a weakened state when they begin their fast.
Be sure you're nice and strong and healthy and not on an Rx that could make it dangerous, and go kick a**, girl0 -
Oh and FYI, starvation mode isn't holding onto your fat. That's a flat out absurd concept. Starvation mode is your body consuming its own muscle and slowing the metabolism as much as it can.
No prolonged fasting! No more than 48 hours at a time!!!0 -
I hate talking about this with people LMAO. I don't mean on here i mean in real life. I never even knew this fasting thing was a "fad" until I saw something on the national news here.
I personally do a 16/8 intermittent fast - mostly got my info from LeanGains.com
I hate talking about it because the actual fasting isn't that important to me in terms of weight loss. For me it is all about calories in and calories out - the fasting is just a "schedule" that helps me personally.
The 16/8 fast is no magic bullet - I am not even sure if people my size are encouraged to use it - but the schedule fits my lifestyle perfectly and it is a mental thing...or a habit. I had bad problems with "grazing". Ya know mindlessly grabbing a bite of cheese here and then, or just grabbing something quick out of the fridge like olives etc... With the 16/8 split, yeah I still somewhat graze during my eating hours, but damage is limited because on the fasting hours I eat nothing. It is like knowing that has become ingrained in my mind. So I find it much easier not to graze...weird I can't tell you psychologically why or how it works for me - but it does.
I also enjoy the fact it allows me to eat bigger meals. (as opposed to the 6 small meals a day methodology)
I mostly follow this protocol (Protocol 3 from Lean Gains)
12-1 PM or around lunch/noon: Pre-workout meal. Approximately 20-25% of daily total calorie intake.
3-4 PM: Training should happen a few hours after the pre-workout meal.
4-5 PM: Post-workout meal (largest meal).
8-9 PM: Last meal before the fast.
So far so good. I don't think fasting is a magic easy button or anything - it still requires willpower and calore deficit, but for osme people it is a great way to schedule those calories.0 -

The intermittent fasting protocol is actually a really healthy thing to do not only for weight loss. There are also some other benefits that seem t ooccur when fasting.These include certain improvement in the blood pricture and improvements in different biomarksers, so it's quite reccomendable t odo it. However! Women do respond differently to intermittent fasting so I would be a bit cautious about that for the females who would like to get into intermittent fasting.0
