Bicycling @ 300lbs?

My BF loves to go on bike rides (leisure) and often takes his little girl. I'm usually working or decline, because I don't have a bike but quite frankly, I'm afraid! I'm not worried about the effort I'll have to extend, but moreso if the bike/wheels can hold my weight. BF found a bike from a garage sale that's a woman (but looks small, could be a kids bike but I'm 5'3 so I'm not sure) that looks like it has gears.

I weight 315 atm, and am wondering if anyone else has started biking at this weight? What bike brand is recommend (if this bike fails) that's not hugely expensive? I've seen some at target with a weight limit of 300lbs but worried I'll be pushing it?

Also, even if the bike upholds, what about the tires?

I started riding a road bike last year at around 296. I would venture to say that a lot of bikes would be fine. You will just want to avoid some of the high end carbon frames and parts (but these would be more expensive anyway), stick to the aluminum and steel bikes. Some of the lighter weight wheels are not as strong but if needed they can always be upgraded to stronger wheels from a local bike shop.

As far as actually riding the bike, yes it is a decent amount of effort but just start with short rides (down the street and back or so) to build some endurance. You are not used to sitting on a bike seat so that will take some time to develop also. Make sure that you get the bike adjusted for your comfort (pay attention to any aches and pains while riding because your body will let you know if your setup needs some more adjustment). Most of all relax and enjoy the ride. The more you ride the easier it gets.

    I hope this helps.

I just sent a text to my friend to see if I could use his bike. He's offered several times, and I've decided to take him up on it. I never even considered it not being able to hold me. I'm 6'5 300lbs myself. I'm ashamed to admit that, because I am suppose to be a lot further along than that, but nonetheless, that is where I am.

I think you will be fine. I've ridden my brother in law's bike, and it was a little on the small side. There was no problem.

But, when in doubt, if you just don't feel comfortable, or better yet, if you don't feel safe. Don't do it, find a bike that works for you. Go to walmart and try some bikes there. Then go on craigslist, because I'm sure you could find something similar, but cheaper, or just go to you 'local' bike shop.

Thanks, good to know other around my size have tried it! I'll definitely look into some stronger wheels first.

If this one goes downhill (haha) then I'll definitely be going around trying out the bikes at Target/Walmart to atleast find a good brand then look to CL and eBay for cheaper deals. Good to know it worked out for you too!
