How do I start toning?

I read that there is no weight requirement as to when to start toning or weight lifting. But I don't really know how to start. I'm new to weight lifting so I have no idea what to do, what muscles to exercise, or how much weight or repetitions should I make. I really need help. And what equipment should I buy? Like dumbbells or kettleball? Can you recommend sites/books that I could use?

New Rules of Lifting for Women and Starting Strength are two that get recommended a lot around here. I think both would be great starts for weight lifting.

I started doing New Rules earlier this year and really liked it. Unfortunately I fell and hurt my ankle and had to stop for a while, but am about to get back on it.

Stronglifts 5x5 is a free website. Simple program. The marketing hype is male-oriented, but the program works for anyone.

Starting Strength is a good book. Very simlilar program to Stronglifts. Great written descriptions of how to do the lifts, if you're nervous about form.

New Rules of Lifting for Women is another good book. More variety in its programs, but a little more complex. An easier read than Starting Strength.

Stronglifts and NROL4W both have groups here on myfitnesspal, with good stickies and people who will answer questions.

You'll do great no matter which one you pick, so just pick the one that you think looks like most fun and try to follow it as close as you can.
