Hi Well I'm in Canada we just had a long weekend for Victoria Day. First two days of longweekend I was fine stuck to eating healthy. Then the last two days of my long weekend I cheated two days in a row. I'm having a hard time because my family isnt supportive. When we go out to eat anywhere they want to go to somewhere like Five Guys Burger and Fries. I didnt end up getting anything there but ended up getting pita pit instead. I cheated when we went to the movies and another day out for icecream. Even my finance got upset when I told him I couldnt eat kraft dinner because it has to many calories. He has to do the grocery shopping now because i live far from where i work by the time i get home the grocery story is closed. So he didnt get anything to make for one day of the long weekend so we didnt have anything healthy to eat. I really want to loose weight but have a hard time knowing what to eat. I have ordered two cookbooks one is called lonneyspoons to get some ideas. I have tired making some recipes I found In magazine but no one in my family like them compaired to when I make something that is high calorie. I feel like its easier to stay overweight sometime because you dont have to try to find alternatives to everything. I was done to 9 pounds lost untill the long weekend now because of my cheating im back where I started. Everytime I cheat no matter how little I end up gaining weight. I walked over a thousand calories to try to burn off icecream still gained weight. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has felt like giving up when it comes to loosing weight. Any suggestion on what you do to in this situations.

Hmm it's hard being the one who wants to lose weight, but unfortunately you really have to take initiative in planning. Do the planning and send your fiance to the grocery store with a list of 'things we need'. Also, don't go for only super healthy recipes -- go for moderate ones instead as a transition for the rest of your family.0

I find most of my recipes in the health and fitness section on Pinterest. I also do all my cooking on Sundays. This long weekend was bad for me too, but you know what? It doesn't matter. It's over, and today is the day you jump back on the wagon. You CAN do your own grocery shopping, on your days off, you CAN plan ahead and figure out what the meals are. For example, tonight I told my fiance and son we're having porkchops and baked potato. I'm not having the baked potato, i'm making spaghetti squash with artichoke hearts and black olives for myself. You don't really have to substitute food either, just make them differently. I bbq A LOT, it's healthy and tastes amazing.0

A lot of the time it's the sauces and cooking method that really adds to the calories in food.
If they love the crunch of fried food, try baking it as you save on the oil. If it's sauces, serve the sauce at the table, or portion your meal up before adding the sauce so you can control how much sauce you use.
Low fat doesn't have to mean low in flavour. Spices and Herbs can be a great way to boost flavour.0 -
You didn't gain back NINE pounds from eating ice cream. You had some extra food/extra sodium, and your body is retaining water.0

there is no wagon!!!!
log it, accept it, and MOVE ON!
one "cheat" meal will NOT make you gain weight, a calorie surplus over an extended period of time will...0 -
First off, it's likely sodium bloat. Second of all, try for a less aggressive weekly goal of a lb a week or so. Thirdly, exercise and eat back your cals for a little more wiggle room.0

A couple things:
I'd consider possibly reframing your approach to weight loss. Having a treat is "cheating" only if you're on a diet. If you're working to lose weight for life and develop new habits that don't end when weight loss ends, there is nothing to cheat on. You can have treats balanced with an overall healthy nutritional plan. Is it "cheating" every time you have ice cream for the rest of your life? If it is, I can't imagine this plan being sustainable; I'd go nuts.
Second, you didn't gain fat from eating ice cream, unless you ate significantly over your maintenance calories for the week. You may have gained scale weight, but that is from excess salt and/or carbohydrates that lead to water retention. Again, this goes back to reframing your approach. Short-term variations on the scale caused by salt, carbs, hormones, or exercise do not matter: long-term trends are key. Consider looking at your weight loss as a weekly or, preferably, monthly average. That will give you a better and *saner* picture of where you stand.
As for the family support, I'm really sorry you don't have that I was lucky in that regard; my husband is fully on board with healthy eating. I think what I'd do with your fiance is sit him down and let him know that you WILL be making healthy changes from now on. You're not on a diet; you want to be a healthy and fit person and that means feeding your body well. You'd like him to join you in finding healthy and delicious recipes. You ARE going to have to buy your own groceries, or at the very least, make him a list.
You may also need to make alternate food choices. My family all eats the same meal, but my husband might eat more than me or he might have a side dish I don't choose to eat. We sit down together to plan our menu every Sunday and buy all the groceries we need for the week that day. That way, there are no excuses: we have a menu written down, we have the food for it, there is no reason to make a box of mac and cheese or order pizza.
I second the idea of finding recipes on Pinterest - seriously, most of our weekly menu is made up of Pinterest finds. Even the higher calorie recipes can be scaled back (use a bit less cheese, oil, salt, etc and it will still be good).
Good luck!0 -

Yes, it is. Only you can decide that you'd like to find the alternatives and only you can find the ones that work for you.
I really like the Looneyspoons cookbook. Another I would recommend is Spilling The Beans by Julie van Rosendaal and Sue Duncan. I haven't been disappointed in any of the recipes. Some are higher cal but so filling that you eat less, so your consumed calories are fairly low. If possible, use dried beans. It'll cut down on the sodium.
A seafood and veggie stir-fry is delicious and low-cal. Served on basmati rice, it's a tasty food option.
Make your boyfriend a list of foods to buy if he's doing the shopping. Stock up on fruits and veggies. There are lots of low-cal, tasty recipes on the internet. You'll have to experiment a bit but you'll find the ones that work for your family.
Hang in there!0 -

It wasn't fat you gained, your body was retaining water. Plus, if you weigh yourself in the morning and again in the evening, you'll find your weight fluctuates greatly over the course of a day. Put the scale away for a few weeks.0 -

(1) You didn't cheat. You had a treat at the movies. Log it, move on, adjust your week so that you have an overall deficit. It's not a big deal and if you feel guilty and call it "cheating" every time you eat popcorn or ice cream, this will be a long and painful "diet" (well, actually it will be short because it will be unsustainable) instead of a series of healthy changes that will keep you healthier for life.
(2) As several replies in this thread say, the nine pounds you said you gained is from water retention, not fat. You did nothing wrong. Your body did nothing wrong. When we eat excess salt (or carbs if we typically consume fewer), our bodies retain water. When we step on the scale, we weigh more. But it is not fat, and it is not permanent. You need to look at long-term trends, not daily variations.0 -
No I always weight myself in the morning with the same amount of clothes on. I weight myself everyday to stay motivated to loose weight. If I dont see results I wont want to get up at 4am to exercise compaired to being able to sleep longer. I have been told that I need to stop weighting myself everyday which Im trying to do0

Thank you everyone for your helpful infomation0

I say this as a person who weighs herself multiple times a day (probably playing mind games with myself), but perhaps you should consider only weighing in once a week. This might give you the motivation to see the biggest results possible on weigh-in day. (Like they do on The Biggest Loser) Especially if you're so easily discouraged over small changes.0 -
Please don't weigh yourself every day. If you are anything like me, it will demotivate you rather than motivate you! Once a week gives you a more realistic reading and you won't drive yourself mad with very natural daily fluctuations that happen to us all!
You didn't put on weight with the treats either....like many have said it is only water weight! Just carry on with the plan and you will be fine! :flowerforyou:0 -

I feel your pain. Make simple substitutions. Bake instead of fry, use olive oil instead of veggie oil, drink more water. You can make your regular recipes healthier. Just use substitutions . There are a number of websites that have charts for food substitutions . I just typed in "food substitution chart". Also I have seen this before and the family will not support you especially a spouse or fiancée because they don't want you to lose the weight because they fear you leaving them. You have to talk to them and ask them why they don't support you. You have to tell them that this is important to you. Good luck!!0

I want to LOSE weight.
I am on a weight LOSS program.
My shoelaces are LOOSE. I need to tighten them.
It's not that difficult people - unless maybe you flunked out of school in grade four.0 -
I tell myself "You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want. NOW WHAT DO YOU WANT?" Staying in touch with my "why" when trying to make big lifestyle changed is what has helped me lose 75lbs and keep it off for more than a year0
