    This is just like Linux.

Computer dweebs laugh at you if you don't call it lih-nucks with a soft 'i'.

However it's named after Linus Torvalds which means that with a US pronunciation it would be lie-nucks and with his native pronunciation it would be lee-nux.

    GO USA! MORANS.

Calling someone a moron because their pronunciation of a abbreviation THEY created goes against the "rules" of the English language is like calling someone a moron because their name is pronounced outside of the norm.

My name is spelled Lea. According to the English language, it should be pronounced Lee, but it is in fact pronounced Le-ah. So, by your logic, my parents are morons. Yay.

Morans? Are you saying we are Irish?
Or were you including yourself in the group that can't spell "moron"?
And it appears the joke was lost on you.

Well, names are different. Someone that went to my uni was named "La-a" and her name seriously was pronounced "Luh dash uh"

As far as the creator being considered "wrong". He created the "Graphics Interchange Format" and when the acronym developed, there was no logical reason to change the pronunciation of the "g" so it still fails to be reasonable that it should be pronounced "Jif."

I guess I'm old school because I called it "GIF" as in... I say each letter seperately. I don't try to turn it into a "word." I do say "j-peg" but then I spell out "JPG." I didn't even know people were turning .GIF into a word....

Heh, GIF actually predates the entire web. You could probably find an old computer magazine article from the late 80's showing the pronunciation. Hooray for old-school porn over a 1200 bps modem! GET OFF MY LAWN!!1!

It's amusing that it's come back into fashion recently.

However, I'm pretty sure nobody gives a crap. So pronounce it whatever you like...

So gimp should be pronounced jimp?

I'm with the hard 'g' brigade, as the 'g' part stands for 'Graphic'. Just because the creator is illogical, doesn't mean anyone else has to be.
