Do workouts that focus on only one part of the body work?

So far I've only done 30 day shred and No more trouble zones, basically the workouts that use the entire body.
I've heard a few times that exercises that focus on one part of the body only don't really work and that you don't burn calories while doing them.Is that true?
I mean,I'd like to do those kind of exercises, but if they don't work,I don't want to be wasting my time.Does anyone know anything about this?

I do cardio days, leg days, arm days, back/shoulder days, total body days... They work.0

If you are doing major muscle groups they would work,if done for similar periods of time.
If you just do some bicep curls for 10 minutes, less likely to be as beneficial.0 -
Of course they will burn calories. All exercise does.
I hope when you say you are thinking of doing exercise which focuses on one part of the body it's because you want to build muscle on that part of the body. Not BURN FAT from ONE PART of the body. Because that ain't gonna happen.0 -
If you are talking about spot-reducing fat, that's a myth. You can work one part of the body to gain muscle in that part (bicep curls, for example), but losing fat is a whole body process achieved by a caloric deficit.
If you are trying to build strength/muscle, heavy compound exercises are a better use of your time. You won't accomplish anything by swinging around the 2 lb. dumbbells.0 -
They work. It just more efficient to target larger muscle groups.
The more muscle fibers you're recruiting and stimulating the more calories you're burning.0 -
All workouts work to some degree.0

You burn calories, but it is impossible to "spot train."0
