Knee pain during and after work out

I dislocated my knee last year. I probably should have had surgery to repair the damage, but my ****ty insurance made it impossible. Instead I have been doing strengthening exercises to get my quads right and it's really been totally fine. I have been doing the 30 Day Shred and it's been going well, but the last few days my knee kills after I'm done. It hurts while I'm doing things like jumping jacks and jumping rope so I end up favoring it. Tonight it's so painful that I was limping and had to ice it and just get off of it all together.

I'm wondering if the knee pain is just a part of getting it back in shape or of it's a sign that I'm doing too much and need to find a different set of exercises. Anyone have experience with this?

I haven't dislocated my knee, but for me, knee pain means I am overworking it and straining previous injuries. I don't stop exercising, I just dial it back and focus on rehab. If the jumping is hurting it, sounds like you should switch to low impact exercises until it feels better. It won't hurt you to completely rest your knee a few days either, and then slowly get back into things. Key word: slowly....

I ignored some knee pain last year and ended up with a torn meniscus due to a twisting motion -- now I have worked super hard to strengthen and support the knee and it feels great most of the time, but impact workouts are not really possible. Fast walking goes fine, but not running, and jumping feels pretty bad. I would listen to the pain and keep working hard on lower impact. Hopefully your smartness at strengthening before a tear or something irreparable will protect you!

Thanks for the replies. I'm definitely going to rest it for a few days. I was really enjoying the workout and I think I'm going to get back to it in a few days but without the jumping. It's so great and gets my heart rate right up, but clearly it's not worth it. I'm almost certainly looking down the barrel at a surgery but I want to drop 20 lbs before I have to do it.
