Finally got my ice maker fixed so I am going to try my hand at making protein shakes/smoothies. Anyone have any recipes they recommend? I am especially interested in ones that are high in potassium and iron.

I am hooked on banana protein shakes. They are so easy and super yummy. I slice up my bananas at the beginning of the week and then freeze them in ziploc bags split into five days worth. I use 1 cup skim milk, 1 scoop Market Pantry vanilla whey protein powder, and 1 frozen medium banana. It tastes very similar to the shakes you would get at dairy queen, but way better for you. Mine are about 300 calories each and I have them for breakfast so I stay full until lunch...usually

I am also going to try a pina colada shake next week. My thought is to use 1/2 cup each skim milk and coconut milk, 1 scoop of MP vanilla whey protein, and about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup chopped frozen pineapple. Siggi's also makes drinkable yogurt that I want to try as my liquid. I haven't yet, so if you try it please post how it tastes.

I make one that many of my friends are in LOVE with:

3/4 c unsweetened almond milk (or coconut milk or skim milk)
1 scoop protein powder (vanilla or choc - I prefer the choc)
    1/2 banana
    3 cups baby spinach
1-2 Tbsp peanut butter (if using creamy pb, i use 1 Tbsp)...or I will use PB2 (powdered pb) - less cals, fat, etc
    2 cups ice

sometimes I add in ground flaxseed, oatmeal or cinnamon
This recipe makes 1 1/2 servings...

I try lots of diff things...but this is my GO TO protein shake...

My current favorite is milk, vanilla protein powder, and PB2, though I don't know about the iron and potassium content. High in protein!

I haven't tried anything creative with protein powder yet but my brother in law who has been doing this for awhile and had gotten down to something like 6% body fat told me one of his favorites was orange creamsicle.

The version here http://mollygalbraith.com/2012/03/my-favorite-protein-shake-recipes/ sounds like how he makes his. I think you can swap the almond milk for skim or 2%. His didn't mention vanilla extract or heavy whipping cream either so those may be optional or depend on your tastes.

OK this shake may not qualify as a protein shake, but if you enjoy an oatey flavor I think you will like it.
8 oz. Soy Milk ( I get Soy Slender Vanilla)
    4 oz Vanilla Greek Yogurt
    1 tbsp Flax Meal
    1Tbsp Dry Oats
    1/2 Cup Frozen Blueberries
    Blend til smooth.

  • I bought some 'strawberry' flavour shakes, but they taste nothing like strawberry and actually make me feel a little bit ill. I spent a lot of money on them, so i'm quite disappointed. Is there any way i can make them taste a bit more edible?

My favorite is 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/3 cup almond milk, 1-2 cups spinach or kale, 1 pear (cored) and 4 med. strawberries. Tastes delicious and very good for you!

I tried the Pina Colada with 1 cup coconut milk (Silk brand) and about 1 cup (150g) fresh cut pineapple that I froze and 1 scoop of MP vanilla protein powder. Super yummy. I think this is my new favorite.

Thanks everyone! Some really good stuff so far. I tried a couple (the snickers one a couple times and the spinach one) and they were delicious. Its going to take me a while to get through Summersbest's list.

    Here's my day starter:

    5 ice cubes
water enough to fill about 1/4th of a bullet blender cup
    1 banana
2 tablespoons PB2 (if you have not tried it -- you MUST!)
2 Tablespoons Metamucil Original Coarse (not orange flavored)

Top with water, blend until smooth.

    This bad boy gives you:

    cals: 305 Carbs: 77 Fat: 2 Protein: 6 Sodium: 124 FIBER: 23!

If you want more protein, add some whey. I am lactose intolerant and can't have whey or milk.

There are no artificial sweeteners, there is some natural sugar in the metamucil, but I would take that over the sugar free kind that has sucrolose (AKA Poison) in it.

WOW there are some really great ideas on here, following for sure!!

The protein shake that I have been making recently is just the Silk brand fruit and protein juice mixed with vanilla whey powder. It's simple, easy, and I just pour it in my shaker cup instead of the blender. I use 2 cups of juice with 2 scoops of powder. It comes out to about 510 cals and 62 protein, but you could easily half it if you need to

I drink a plant-based protein powder for breakfast. The powder doesn't have any soy or whey. Like with all protein powders, when you add fruit, etc... it tastes good.
