My parents dont believe in me..

Well I joined the gym yesterday, and I went yesterday and today for 1 and 1/2 hours. But my parents keep putting me down and saying that I will stop and its a waste of money. Its really getting me down Im afraid my motivation to work out will go.. how can I stay motivated?

You don't need others to believe in you. Think about why you are making this lifestyle change and focus on those reasons. You should be doing this for yourself--not for anyone else. We all have naysayers in our lives and people who try to deter us from our goals. It's up to you to decide whether you are going to believe them or believe in yourself.0

My parents didn't believe in me either.
They probably won't believe in you until they see actual changes, so keep going, they'll realize how serious you were about your goal.
It's also been a huge motivation for me. Proving myself to them.
And when proving yourself goes along with your personal goal, it's perfect for determination.0 -

Are they paying for the gym? If so, can you pay for it yourself? You can also walk and run outside the gym if money is an issue. Buy some good shoes (go to a running store), which should be your only expense, and try the C25K program. Love yourself. You matter! Do the right thing by yourself no matter what other people say and you will never regret it.0 -

I couldn't agree with this more. Negativity is just apart of the journey. You can do this. Do not let them discourage you. The gym is your happy place so continue to go and do not give up!0 -
You can do this!! You have to believe you are worth the effort. Make attainable goals. I'd say promise yourself you will go at least 3 times a week. If you make unrealistic goals, like going everyday, you may give up.0

Feel free to Add me, I have an awesome group of MFP friends! Log in everyday and prove them wrong! That's the best way is to show them! Sadly sometimes family who you would think would be your biggest cheerleaders turn out to be the worst but no worries the MFP Community is here for ya!0

I knew lots of people like this when I first started, so I chose not to tell most people what I was doing.
8 months later everyone wants to know my secret and is so shocked, I kind of prefer it that way than having people setting you up for failure.
The people who did know what I was doing didn't get supportive until I was about 2 months in and had some fairly decent before & after pics to show them the inches I'd lost so far... the best way is to just prove everyone wrong.

I think my mom sometimes did this on purpose: told me I couldn't do something, because she knew it would make me mad and try harder. It hurt me at the time, and I wouldn't recommend parenting that way, but it sure did motivate me.0

Tell them that a lot of Dr's work out at the gym and you are thinking your going to snag a rich husband and you are going to work on giving them grandchildren. I Guarantee they will stop talking about the gym.0

My daughter wants to lose too much weight too fast. I am encouraging her to increase her exercise and we worked on her MFP goals together to st them at healthier amounts. She is going out running this morning and I am so proud of her.
I am sorry your parents are not being supportive. This is something you need to do for you so you lead a happier, healthier, longer life. I am at the age where my parents and aunts and uncles are fighting various end of life ailments. For the few who worked out daily, kept in shape, even into their 80s, it has made a huge difference in ability to fight diseases and extend life and improve the quality of their life. They have been my motivation and inspiration.
Prove your parents wrong. More important - do it for you.

My boyfriend was the same way. In the fall I wanted to buy an elliptical but he didn't want it to become a dust collector. Now that I have been serious for a few months he said this fall I can buy one so I can continue to exercise during the harsh winter when I don't even want to walk my dog outside.0

Use their negativity AS your motivation. Make it your mission in life to prove them wrong.0 -
use their negativity as fuel. My parents are the same way, if they don't have something to argue about they are not happy. I'll go to my zumba classes and my dad will scuff and say something like, "Going to your dance class again, you can't lose wait that way". Or I'll say I've lost so and so pounds and I'll get, " Well you need to lose triple that amount, why's it taking you so long" I get so frustrated, especially since my mom loves to bake and always has cookies, brownies, cakes, candies everywhere. Very annoying!
Hang in there and prove them wrong! Keep telling yourself, your trying to get healthy, your doing this for you not them, who cares what they think I will do this, I can do this, reach for the stars baby!0 -
Reading this makes me really grateful for the positive & supportive family and friends that I have in my life. No one has ever told me that I couldn't do it, but I think it probably would have made me that much more determined if they had. Feel free to add me for motivation or support...0

I got the same thing about 90lbs ago then once they saw that I was devoted they let up a bit. I had to basically just do my own thing and if they were in they were in, if not then I had to ignore then and prove it to myself that I could. KNOW that you are strong enough to do this even if they don't think you are right now and KNOW that you deserve to be healthy and happy. The only person that you owe any explanation or proof to is yourself. One of the easiest ways to stay motivated is to give yourself mini challenges like "if I did 5 push ups today, then I will do 8 by Wednesday" or something similar. You got this girl!0

Id say prove them wrong but you already know they are wrong and don't need to prove them anything, so use their negative attitudes to empower yourself.0

When somebody tells you, you cant loose weight, that your just waisting your time. Prove them wrong. Loose weight, get healthy, and when its all said and done you can rub it in their face and say "yes I can AND yes I did!"0

I'm not kidding you my workouts thrive on people like this. You need to think "Tell me I can't and its a waste of time I will prove you wrong and become as fit as I can be!" My grandma use to tell me I had a big butt all the time and when I want to give up I remember that and push harder. This was when I was 16 now at 31 I realize she was jealous of my round booty because hers was in line with her thigh! It's hard but I forgive her but will never forget those comments.0
