To get a gym membership or not?

I can't really decide if I should get myself a gym membership or not. At home I have a treadmill and a set of 5 pounds weights and an absurd amount of Jillian Michaels DVD's. Should I look into getting a gym membership or do you think that I can still get enough of a varied set of workouts at home?

I think if you get membership to a gym you'll probably be more motivated to exercise. When you have equipment it tends to not really be used because you get into the mindset of "0h I'll do it in a minute", when you pay for gym membership you tend not to have this attitude!

Box store Gyms vary in quality. If you find one that will give you a weeks worth of passes, or a month to month sign up, give it a try.

    I agree with you.

I'm the opposite to most, I had a gym membership but never felt able to use it.
Me and the husband built a basic gym in our garage and I feel more motivated to use it

It depends. I was really good about working out at home, and was motivated enough to turn off the tv and get to it. However, I'm also a bit competitive, so when I hit a wall I did join a gym and started doing the classes because I got to the point where I needed to push myself further and I knew I'd do it in a group setting. But it all depends on your motivation, and finances.

Do you use the equipment and DVDs that you have at home on a regular basis?

I also have a variety of dumbbells, kettle bells, videos, bands, etc. at home. The only thing I use is my yoga mat and one DVD for my morning yoga.

I hate working out at home, and hate exercise DVDs.

I love going to the gym and lifting free weights and doing a variety of HIIT.

If I plan a home workout, I procrastinate and lay on the couch and eventually don't do it. If I plan a gym workout, I know I need to get ready and get to the gym by a certain time to get my workout in.

You just need to decide which you're more likely to do on a regular basis, and then carry on and do it.

Totally depends on the person. I've never had a gym membership, and still manage to work out 5-6 days/week. I just work it into my daily routine, like I would taking a shower, cooking dinner, or anything else.

I disgree. I have a gym membership and there are plenty of times work gets crazy and I can't go and while I couyld hop in my TM at hime, run outside or do a video in the days I can"t make it or don't want to go I don't.

OP:5 lb weights aren't heavy enough if you want to build strength and muscles.

The question is will you use it? If you can find gym you want to go to see if you can get week pass to see if you lke it and if you will go.

I workout at home and run at parks. To increase your weight you can get some kettle bells. They come in 5, 10, and 15 pounds weights.

I would go to some gyms around where you live, and get some tours! Just tell them you are thinking of joining. I know the gym I used to go to gave me a week pass for free before I joined, just so I knew what it was like. Never hurts to ask!

It all depends on whether you actually use the equipment you have at home or not. I know for me working out at home just did not work for me; I could always find something else that needed to be done; dishes, laundry, my 3 year old needing something...the list was endless. With a gym membership I get up every morning and go, no excuses and once I am there I enjoy my time to focus on me.

If you lift and work with progressively heavier weights, it's gonna be very expensive to replicate at home what's available at a full-blown gym.

sounds like what you really need is commitment.
