Hey all, my gym has a fitness challenge that starts soon but I am not sure if I want to do it. They measure your body fat and muscle mass and whoever loses the most fat wiins. They have a seperate category for men and women. Should I try this? I am just a bit uncertain as I am not very competitive. Anybody do a fitness challenge at their gym? If so what was your experince? Thanks!

No, I have never done one. I go to a gym on a military base, and they don't really do stuff like that. But as far as you are concerned, why not do it? Worst case scenario, you don't win but you lost some fat. Oh the horror lol. :flowerforyou:0

Is there a cost to participate? If so, are the costs about what the tests themselves would be? I would do it just to have that info about my body, not really expecting to take home the big prize.0

My spin/barre studio had a challenge where you had to do 30 classes in 30 days (the prize was 30% off your next package). I quit after class #28 because I realized I was prioritizing the challenge over other, more important, things!0

I would take the challenge, why not its a bit fun and healthy competition. I do monthly mini challenges with a workout buddy of mine... each month switch it up and added on top of regular workout routine. But watch out it can be addicitive! Set short goals, reach em and conquer them.
Good Luck0 -
I like challenges. I think that they jump start motivation...even if you don't feel like you need it. Like another poster says..what is the worst thing that could happen? You are more informed about the stats of your body and you work hard to lose fat. If you don't win, well you don't win--if you aren't very competitive, that doesn't matter. But a challenge sure does make it fun Good luck!0

I am also not competitive, but I let my trainer talk me into doing one, and it was a pretty good experience. Especially since I won, and got a free month of training out of it. But mostly the good part was the accountability - it's easier to stay on track when you know that fifteen other people are going to be watching your weigh-in. Or at least I thought it was - there were guys who'd be up six pounds and explain that they "had" to eat barbecue and drink beer all weekend because it was their buddy's birthday or whatever. So yeah.
I think it would probably be worse if you had the drive to win at all costs, because that's when you'd start doing dumb things like starving yourself or doing eight hours of cardio a day or whatever. If you go in with a reasonable attitude and goal, it'll probably be fun. (Ish. As fun as weight loss can be, anyway.)0 -
I'm doing one. For ours, we set our own goals. It's not about a single winner, although there are some donated prizes for certain winners. There are also awards for meeting the goal you set for yourself. I'm focusing on the "prizes" I can attain by competing with myself. The cost as a package is actually quite a bit cheaper than the separate personal training, bod pod measurements, etc. I'm trying it for the accountability. Although I think I could make it without that accountability, I might have given up by now, or at least not be as far. So, not absolutely necessary for me...but the money wasn't really a problem.0
