Shouldn't lift that heavy for deadlifts huh?

My boyfriend went through a pretty intense phase of lifting with his brother a few years ago and I like to ask him questions about his maxes and whatnot.

This morning I asked my BF, "what's the most you've ever deadlifted?"
His response: "I don't know. I never really got into deadlifts. They mess your back up."
Me: "Not if you do it right."
Him: "Okay. Well, you shouldn't be lifting that heavy for deadlifts anyways."

Umm yesterday I did 140 lbs and I weigh 162ish lol. Haven't hurt my back once. Silly boy. Lifting is for women.:drinker:

That is crazy. I've had lower back trouble for 15 years and heavy lifting has done nothing but make it better. I have to really watch my form, but that's a good thing! Good for you!

The most I have ever deadlifted was 450lbs and I don't have back problems. It is all in the how you lift using proper form. I hope to one day beat my personal record and get into the 600's. Anyways good job for you and keep on lifting.

Your boyfriend sounds like he's deep in the bro science (i.e. BS). Show him Konstantin Konstantinovs deadlifting, and tell him to stop being a wuss.

I'm always amazed at how many guys are scared to actually lift. It would have been more accurate for him to admit that he just never learned how to do them properly than claiming they hurt you. There's no shame in admitting you don't know how to do something...I don't know how to do a proper clean and press, but I'm not going to claim that people shouldn't be doing them.

    You win! :drinker:

I just started lifting so I'm only at 65lbs for deadlifts, but I figure getting the form right is most important before increasing the weight. Good for you at 140!

Yeah he's just not the researching type. He just doesn't know any better lol and I can't convince him to come to the gym with me..

Deadlifts fix back problems. I'm stuck at a 290# deadlift simply because of my grip and my refusal to use straps.

    lol

There are strength standards out there on the internet somewhere where it says a max weight for deadlifts would eventually be 1.8 times your body weight. They are hard for me because I have grip issues...but I am almost at 100% of body weight.

According to Shape Magazine, you shouldn't lift more than your man because his ego is fragile.

Totally kidding and good for you!!!
I deadlift more than my bodyweight and it's awesome!

Show him a picture of Amanda Harris deadlifting and have him read her story about how she got into lifting in the first place.

    I deadlifted 475 lbs back in high school. There's a wagon I wish I hadn't fallen from.

^This! Same here -- I have lower back issues and deadlifting (and yoga) have helped more than anything else ever has.

That's man-code for making an excuse for not knowing and for you not to find out so you have more knowledge than him. I recommend you not tell him your progress, that will likely ensue a fight because his ego is now further bruised. Keep up the good work.

This makes me so sad. The message that women can't know about weight lifting or be successful at it if their men aren't.

I love this thread! I get the "deadlifts are dangerous" from some of my coworkers, but I truly think that they just don't know how to do them properly. I taught my husband how to as well and he now loves to deadlift!

That's not true of all men. My GF exercises regularly and we talk about stuff all the time. The only thing that I don't like is her gym has her lifting crossfit style and her back has been hurting her a lot lately. She had never done Cleans before and they had her do them last week for the first time for a lot of reps and Cleans are so technique driven that it's easy to hurt yourself if not careful.

You could always appeal to his bro science, and tell him to do Sumo Deadlifts instead since they aren't "as back intensive." Though I'm guessing he'll find an excuse for that too. Anything to focus on benching and curls.
