It depends which perspective you look at it from. I'll assume you're referring to the music, which is rap (remember hip hop is the whole culture or lifestyle which includes break dancing, grafitti and dee jaying). There are many ways you can look at it. If it's from a commercial or mainstream point, then it certainly isn't what it used to be. You have your Gucci Mans and your Drakes (who thinks reading rhymes on a phone is suppose to be a freestyle) who are not doing the genre any favours. But there are a lot of good rappers out there who are working hard to keep the genre alive. People who come to mind are Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Talib Kweli as well as largely underground crews like Kooley High and Clear Soul Forces. Also listen to a little known white lady from Detroit who goes by the name Invisible. She'll blow your mind away with her lyrical flow.

Many old school rapper have also still somehow managed to stay relevant today and are still busting out dope rhymes and teaching these young rappers a thing or two about rap. Veterens like Krs-one, Common and MC Supernatural are still keeping the flames of rap music burning bright. So in a nutshell what I'm saying is that hip hop or rather rap, is still very much alive and well. You just have to know where to look!

I only really listen to The Roots, Murs, Nas, Krit, Phonte and Lupe (sometimes) now.

Beyond that, The Illz and a NZ guy - David Dallas. And that is literally it.

Real Hip Hop: Most Def, Common, Wu-Tang, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Dead Prez, Lupe Fiasco, Mobb Deep, A Tribe called Quest, Tupac, Biggie, etc..just to name a few.

Nicki minaj, 2 chainz etc..? Lyrical garbage IMHO.

No way there is a lot of good and also up-and-coming rappers in my opinion that come to mind.

Kendrick Lamer, Wale, Logic, A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Action Bronson, Chevy Woods, and Jody Duff.
