Training for a 5k Color Run

I signed up for my first 5k (color run) on July 20th.
Problem being, I cannot run for the life of me. 1 minute at a time seems to be the max. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can work up to this 5k?

I have never been a runner and I'm worried I won't be able to do this. :|

Thanks in advance!
Ashley

Look up a program called couch to 5k you do not have too much time to train but anything will help. Good Luck! I suck at running too I have been going at it for 90 days as of today and I was able to do the 5k on the tredmill without stopping. Just pace yourself. :)

I signed up for one too! Mine is at the end of June.

I was exactly where you are, back in February when I signed up, and on Thursday I ran 5k for the first time in my life, and did it in 43 minutes (not fast, but non stop jogging). It's totally doable, you just have to push yourself, and try using a couch to 5k program!

One of the great things about the Color Run is that there's not a competitive aspect to it.
It's meant to be just FUN. Also, it's not timed. Of course, you can always look at your watch and
keep time yourself if you have a goal in mind.

Another thing is....when you get to each color station or water station, there will be congestion, because of so many people.
So, you will have plenty of opportunities to walk....because you will be forced to walk by the lack of traffic flow.

I've run A LOT of 5k's and personally I think The Color Run is a great starter 5k. It gets one under your belt.
So, just have fun. Run when you can and walk when you feel like it.

As far as training....anything with intervals (like C25K) is great for working yourself up to being able to run an entire 5k.

Good luck and have fun no matter what!

I used an app called 5K Runner on my iphone. I was so out of shape that even running for a minute straight wasn't doable, so before I touched the app I built my stamina working out on the stationary bike. If it weren't for a knee injury, I would have reached 5K a month ago. Yesterday I finished it by running for 38 minutes straight.

Don't stress and I suggest C25K as well. Do the CR for fun as that's what it is and honestly I've never really seen someone fully run it. Once you finish the program run a true 5K race to test your progress.

Whichever program you use to get you running keep in mind that you want to be running slowly as you build up your stamina. It actually takes practice and patience to run slowly as the natural tendency, especially when first starting out, is to try to go full out.

If you're running with a buddy try to keep the pace slow enough that you can carry on a conversation, if you're running by yourself try breathing slowly (eg 4 steps breathing in & 4 steps breathing out). Don't try to progress too quickly and don't feel bad if you can't run the full 5km after only 8 weeks.

    Have fun!
