Exercising while Injured (Sprains)

I attend a MMA gym four times a week and take kickboxing & BJJ classes. I sprained my right ankle five weeks ago in kickboxing and then two and a half weeks ago I sprained my right wrist in Gi class. Both feel fine in everyday use and I've taken some time off from the gym to heal. I still want to keep excising though without further injuring myself. What are some good exercises/tips?

Note: Both were grade one sprains and I've been religious about icing both injuries and keeping them wrapped for a least a week.

I give horrible advice.. but I will give advice of a fighter.. work around it.. keep ice and ibuprofen on hand at all times.. being hurt and training hurt is pretty much the name of the game. You are training to hurt someone else so your trai king partners accidently hurt you.. once you get in the cage or ring depending on the fightthey arent gonna say time out cause you got an ouchy.. keep doing what your doing but get your *kitten* back to training..
  • I know I need to keep training. I'm pretty new to MMA and not looking to fight anytime soon. I've been doing core work like crazy while not in the gym just because it doesn't require my wrists or ankles. I also attend classes just to watch and learn as well. Unfortunately we spend a lot of time sparring and rolling and doing that while injured is just likely to make the injury worse and suffer lasting damage. I want to stay active, but I don't want to keep training like I'm not injured and do permanent harm either.
  • Tape and take it light on the offending appendages and then do the wrist and ankle strengthening routines to help prevent re-injury. My wrists and ankles are double jointed, I also used to compete in TKD when I was younger and less broken. The good ol' army saw to the end of that fun. Well, my suggestions are what I've been told to do in the past and from my own experiences. Seeing as I've permanent damage that could have been prevented, I have some key points for everyone:

1- don't avoid going to the doctor if you think you are hurt, know your body and the difference between exercise and damage pain
2- take precautions such as stretching, warming up, and proper exercise equipment/gear
3- if you get injured, back off from your routine and then ease back into it, going full force after a break will likely result in re-injury
4- the most important key - IF YOU RE-INJURE YOURSELF, IT WILL TAKE LONGER TO HEAL AND REPETITIVE INJURIES MAY LEAD TO PERMANENT DAMAGE TO YOUR BODY, treat your body with care, it is your sole vessel for this life :drinker:
