Okay, so you are at a function, party, date, family get together, whatever... And there is all this food around, typical munchie stuff. Chips, dips, fattening sauces on everything, cakes, cookies, all the high calorie, low nutrition stuff that we are trying to avoid like the plague... and there is always at least 2-3 people pushing food at you... "Try this, it's amazing!", "Have you eaten yet?" "Let me fix you a plate"
How many times do I have to be nice about saying no?? They don't hear me when I politely refuse... They think I am just waiting for the right thing or the right time. So they keep trying to find something that I will eat... I get so crazy frustrated!!!
Short of saying, Do NOT push any more food in my face!!! I don't know how to say it so that they hear me. HELP!!

Take the plate and set it down somewhere. Say you are full. Don't let this be an excuse. I promise no one will sit on you and funnel the food in your mouth.0

This, just take a plate of food. Add stuff that you are happy to eat and just take the odd nibble.0 -
Say "No thank you". Repeat as needed. You may repeat it a lot. Or, as said above, take the plate and just walk around with it. Let them pile on whatever they want, you don't have to eat it. Or get a plate of healthier options (there's usually a token fruit tray or cheese & crackers). Again, you don't have to eat it. But people are less likely to push food at me if I already have something. But really, "no thank you" as often as necessary.0

Omg, it was the worst when my little six year-old cousin was trying to offer my mom and I dessert. He was like "Cookie or pie?" and just couldn't comprehend that we didn't want either. There was no Option C in his mind - The only choices were "Cookie or pie?"
He gave up, but man, it was like we were doing him a horrible disservice by resisting.0 -
I don't see anything wrong with someone asking if you've tried something because they think it's amazing. Otherwise, I've never had anyone try to force food on me. I guess just keep saying no. Sounds easy enough.0

"No, thank you" (with a smile) should be enough (but I know most of the time it isn't). Our celebrations tend to be focused around food and alcohol, and usually overindulgence in both. I grew up in a family that believed turning down seconds was a sin - and we all have weight issues thanks to that school of thought! But learning to say "No" is hard. If two "No, thank you"s doesn't cut it, then you could politely say, "I've said 'no, thank you' twice, and I meant it. I'd appreciate if you'd stop. Thank you." My 90 year old grandmother is a HUGE food pusher (especially if she knows I'm on a diet), and it's so hard to say no to her, so I understand. I've also noticed the same deal with alcohol. I have cut back a lot on alcohol because it sucks up my calories and because it often leads me straight to a food binge (sometimes even just one drink will do it). When I turn down a drink, I get the pregnancy questions. All night.0

Thanks everyone... and I admit, generally, No, Thank you is not enough of an answer... Italian families have no comprehension of turning down food... I just tend to get really ticked off when I feel like I am being ignored... or not heard... and I guess a big part of the problem is that if I have a plate of food in my hand and am carrying it around, eventually I am going to eat it... so just carry the plate around is not really an option for me.0

You can say no. You can choose to not eat food on your plate. You don't want to, so you don't.0
