Heart Rate Monitors

Hi there fitness pals!
I want to buy another heart rate monitor primarily to track calories burned. I have bought two in the past and neither of them have been reliable. Both have regularly cut out halfway through exercising and one does not work when doing strengthening/toning/stretching exercises. Does everyone have this problem or have I just been unlucky? If yours works well doing cardio and strengthening please let me know the make and model!

Just in case you weren't aware of this feature, when you go to the message boards section, there is a button called search and you can type in a keyword (ex: HRM or heart rate monitor) and you can see the threads that have already been created on the topic. Good luck! :flowerforyou:

No HRM will be able to estimate calorie burn for anaerobic or below aerobic exercise, exactly the ones you list.
The formulas for estimating calorie burn (they don't measure it, they measure HR only) ONLY apply to steady-state aerobic exercise, between 90 to whatever your Lactate Threshold or Anaerobic Threshold are, probably around 160-170 on upper side.
Anaerobic exercise like lifting and sprinting, and easy stuff below that, will be inflated.0 -
I've had a New Balance N4 for several years - works great.0

I use the FT4, just bought it a few days ago and love it!0
