This is a wonderful site. You can set up your food diary to count carbs, so it should be very useful for you. Before I joined, my doctor said I was borderline diabetic and about 2 months from being put on medication. At my last doctor appointment he told me that I’m no longer in the danger zone and my sugar is great. The site really helps to keep me on track and is helping me get my weight and other health issues under control. Welcome and best of luck!!!! :flowerforyou:

Welcome! I've lost over 60lbs before, and while the travel down the road was hard, it was so well worth it! Please don't forget to exercise, that is the KEY to losing weight & don't get discouraged if the scale doesn't "move", mine didn't for the first few months, but I kept exercising almost every day (5-6 days p/wk) and it suddenly showed! I may weight more than I would like, but I fit into clothes & look better than I did in them when I was 10-15lbs less than I am now!
MFP has been a great support group, no matter where you come from, what your weakness is, or what your reasons for doing this, there are many that will help support you :flowerforyou:

    Welcome to the site :)

Actually watching everything is important when you're diagnoised as a diabetic. Not only carbs but as you're now at high risk of high blood pressure, cholestrol issues etc. watching those issues is also just as important as I'm sure your doc shared with you.

So it's important to not only just watch how many carbs you eat but what type and keep your sodium well under control as well as eat proper fats in your diet.

Has your doc sent you to a dietican they would be one to help taylor your daily carb count, cals, fats etc.

Yup, most definitely this is the place for you if you're looking for long term healthy results and a new way of life!:drinker: There are number of T1's & T2's who's dropped quite a few lbs. simply by keeping track on their MFP food diary and regular workouts. For me working out regularly is what got my numbers way back down to the normal range. For others it's cutting way back on the garbage (simple carbs, white foods, aka junk/processed foods), of course I also eat quite healthy but for some reason working out has totally reversed everything for me.

It IS possible, though I've not insulin dependent, a huge change in diet and excercise kept me from ever having to go down that route.

I wish you all the best, it's time to take your illness VERY VERY seriously now, jump on the boards, join a group, make new friends, search the recipes, share healthy recipes, give, give give and you'll receive back 100 fold in return, I promise:drinker: . The more involved you get the more you'll get out of this site.

This IS the place that will CHANGE YOU LIFE HON!!!:flowerforyou:

This is a great site for support. You get what you want out of it. As for what you are going to eat just be careful being a new diabetic My husband is diabetic and when he started to lose weight on a previous diet he really had to watch his insulin intake because he didn't need as much after losing weight. He would go low a lot at first. Just be careful. A lot of people have as much weight as you do to lose. Me included, Its an easier journey when you have support. Friend me if you want. Have a good day.

    Hi!

I'm a Type 2, too - I was diagnosed at Christmas last year and have lost 80lbs since then. I'm not having to take insulin other than Metformin tablets so I'm not sure if my experiences work for you, and I'm not an expert at this, but I think I've done well enough to at least say what happened to me. The hardest thing I found was getting into the mindset to ONLY eat food that I knew the nutritional content of. It took me a few months and the creation of my own database to track this, but once I got into it I found I could get rid of my database and do it just in my head as I went to buy/eat stuff.

Now, this site makes what I did when I started to lose weight in a much better way - you've got at your fingertips here a great list of products, and should be able to make decisions far more easily. I've only been here a week, less than that even, and I think it's a fantastic resource. The people I've met so far thanks to them kindly showing friendship on here have already given me some fantastic support that I wasn't getting anywhere else and I don't think it's a coincidence that this week I've really started to push myself again.

At the end of the day though, you have to come to know your own body, and what you can and can't eat - from both a sugar levels perspective and weight loss perspective. You'll have some trips along the way when you push it just too much, but as long as you're careful you don't go too far (if you think you're eating something stupid, don't eat it) then that's the best way to work it all out.

But good luck with it, and feel free to add me! :)

Yes. Watching your carbs is very important. I am pre-diabetic and joining this website has helped me control how many carbs I am eating at each meal. It's important because you need to keep your blood sugar levels on an even keel. I know you will notice a tremendous difference once you start losing weight. Good luck. I know you can do it.

Yes - you are in the right place. I too and a type 2 diabetic, although I am not using insulin yet - still working the list of other drugs. I currently take both Byetta and Januvia and have tried metformin in the past (it did not work out for me). I really didn't take the diagnosis all that seriously in the beginning. But recently after my near heart attack after returning from a trip to China, I am totally serious about resolving my diabetes and losing weight. Prior to my diabetes diagnosis, I already had high blood pressure and I've had high cholestrol since I was a teenager. I too need to lose 50 pounds. Since I've been using MFP on my phone and found the website, I have lost 6 pounds. So definately you are in the right place and you are not alone.

As a T2 diabetic myself, I just want to say YOU CAN TOTALLY DO IT! Just work closely with your doctor, and I strongly encourage working with a nutritional specialist as well. It's important to watch all of what you eat, not just calories or carbs. Think of food as fuel & your calories/carbs like money in the bank. You have X amount of money in your bank to purchase fuel. Make sure it's the best fuel you can buy!
Also wanted to say I have been on an insulin pump for a year now, so totally know what you're going through. You can do it though, don't let anyone tell you you can't!
