Late night ice cream and cheetos cravings

So, I have this issue. I will eat healthy all day and then 10 pm hits and I feel like I am starving and I crave poptarts, cheetos and chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Bad. Bad. Usually I give into these outrageous cravings and am way too embarresed to even record them on MFP. I feel awful later. Any advice?

lol..... I'm sorry I just have to say that I pigged out on chocolate sea salt ice cream and Cheetos last night. Whoops.
    They were awesome!!!!
But- can't make a habit of it. The best advice I can give is not to keep stuff like that at the house. If it's not here then you won't eat it.

Essentially, there are no bad foods, jut bad portions. If you're finding that you crave these every day, work them into your calorie budget. I have a super wicked sweet and chocolate tooth so I have icecream or Oreos nearly every day. If i didn't, I'd end up eating a whole pint of icecream instead of reasonable serving or 15 Oreos instead of 3 or 4.

The other thing would be to never keep them in your pantry and fridge then they're not there for you to eat.

I have the ice cream problem at my house. We got into this habit and soon the two of us were eating a small carton in two days. So I am planning to make frozen banana ice cream,. You freeze the banana, stick them in your food processor and voila !

I don't have the issue with Cheetos as I never ate them. They aren't cheese to me and the color seemed to be alien to normal food. Fritos are another story. We just don't buy them.
If you eat the entire pint, then just stop buying it. You can always eat a cone out somewhere rather than gazing into the freezer at 10:30 at night with a spoon in hand.
I've been there and that is why I am here.

I keep fudgsicles and orange creamsicles on hand (90 and 60 cals) for those moments.
I also allow myself a treat daily.

Be careful if you don't have an actual food processor. Making banana ice cream broke my blender :P

Record these things before you eat them. Make a decision about what you want more.

I could kill an entire bag of cheetos in an evening. Those orange puffs are dangerous!

I still have bad nights like that too. I've since changed what I keep in the house. If I have a bag of chips, i'm going to eat that entire bag until its gone, usually in one sitting. But, you can't eat it if its not in your house, so dont buy that stuff if you dont trust yourself.

I do enjoy the occasional nighttime snack so I have started buying gluten free sesame crackers from Whole Foods and making my own hummus and black bean dip. I found that these healthier options satisfy my need for salty snacks, and I dont feel bad in the morning for eating something on the more nutritious side that I made from scratch.

My fiance has a serious sweet tooth when it comes to ice cream and I started to buy him the weight watcher ice cream bars. He loves them and they are pretty low in calories.

Is it a habit or a craving? It's 10:00 p.m. so I must need something to nibble on?

I agree don't keep it in the house. Stock up on lower calorie options.

Stock up on dairy-free ice cream treats... I recommend So Delicious.

So Delicious Mini Ice Cream Sandwich = 100 calories
So Delicious Fudge Ice Cream = 80 calories

A previous poster said it already.

Weight gain and loss boils down to calories in vs. calories out.

I'm not advocating a daily cheetos habit but if you're obsessed with them, why not have them a few times a week and adjust your daily intake to allow for the 300 calories or however many come in a bag of cheetos?

Making "frozen banana ice cream" is no better than eating real ice cream *if* you're surpassing your total daily calorie limit. You'll gain weight regardless. I have a friend who loves DQ so she eats a mini blizzars several times per week. They're 390 calories each, so she saves this amount and has her evening treat, and loses weight right on schedule.

First of all - if you don't record what you eat, how will you ever know if your calorie level is working for you? I am a numbers junkie and I look back at my progress, calorie levels, etc routinely, especially when I think I need to reasses my progress. Lying to yourself is not a good idea.

As for ice cream and cheetos - I say save some of your daily calories for your late night snack. I eat stuff like that every night before bed. SOmetimes 500 calories. Timing of meals makes no difference and eating "junk food" is not bad so long as it fits in your calorie allottment.

Agree with most of the above posters. If you are trying to lose weight most people cannot keep such items in the house. I agree that you should treat yourself with them once in awhile, but for me and I know a lot of other people that have struggled with weight their whole life, if it is in the house it will be eaten and it won't be portion controlled

My hubby is an ice cream junkie... especially right before bed. We meaure out what we're going to have. We're learned about 1 1/2 servings makes a really decent ice cream cone if you get the little cake cones too. The cake cones are only about 20 calories each.

And when I don't have enough to indulge with him I keep an assortment of other frozen treats in the house.

No Sugar Added Fudgesicle (40 calories)
    Blue Bunny treats (60-120 calories)
Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches (120-140 calories)
Mini Ice Cream Cups (100 calories)
Freezie Pops (25 calories)... you know... the kind we all had as kids... they are still pretty yummy when you're desperate for a frozen treat.

Pirates Booty is yummy and a good replacement for Cheetos. I get the Skinny Cow Ice Creams. They are portion controlled. That is key for me.

I can't have just one Skinny Cow - but I have found that Wells Blue Bunny makes Champ Ice Cream Cone - MINIS - and they are about 110 or 150cal per piece. They are small on cal but BIG ON TASTE.

As for the salt - maybe some roasted almonds (healthier than cheetos, and maybe more satisfying). Or keeping only small packs of baked cheetos? I can't keep cheetos in my house - my hubby and I love them too much.

I do the same as you at time - best wishes for conquiring it!

Save some calories here and there throughout the day and eat some of what you are craving?
Or just eat healthier foods (you can probably eat a lot more apple slices dipped in no sugar added melted chocolate than you can cheetos for the same calories!)

Just before your cravings usually hit, drink a glass of water with a couple of tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar. Don't know why it works but usually all cravings subside.

I kept having these cravings, too, and wished for a "Silence of the Lamb's" mouth lock to keep me from eating. Instead, I put all the "good" food in the refrigerator, and each night after dinner I had my husband put a chain around the two handles along with a combination lock. After a week, that bad habit was somewhat broken. When it comes right down to it, it's all about will power.

I do love ice cream, and I find it really does satisfy me. After I eat it, I feel full and happy, so I do splurge on it fairly often when my daily calories allow.

I had opened my food diary to MFP friends ... but then had days when I was SO embarrassed that I was feeling the urge to not include some things. I knew that was not the way to go. So I switched my diary back to private and committed to at least be honest with myself. I do hope, once I get the whole calories under control, to improve the eating enough that I feel I can open my diary to my friends here again.

... as for Cheetos ... back in Jr. High I bought a HUGE bag with my own money and refused the share them with my siblings or friends. I must have overdosed ... I have not had one since! I think I still sometimes TRY to repeat this overdose on other types of junk food, but alas it hasn't seemed to work again *Ü*

I agree with several suggestions others have made. Don't keep it in the house. Or maybe buy it and portion it out for yourself so that you can grab a serving at a time (easier done with Cheetos than ice cream). Or just go to bed once the food craving hits. I do this a lot: "Man I'm feeling wicked snacky...time for bed!" lol. Or if you are actually really hungry at 10pm, as opposed to just craving junk, maybe portion your calories out during the day to save some for later in the evening so that you don't wind up ravenous. Good luck!

I have ice cream just about every night. I just work it in.
