Cats/dogs chasing their tails

What do they think it is back there? Surely they know it's their tail? Just watched my cat run up and down the stairs and then on the top step try to catch his tail. He then intently stared at it for about 30 seconds waiting for it to twitch, and then went in circles down the stairs again trying to catch it again. He then got bored.

Seriously, what are they like?

Funny (but not so funny) story. Lol, my cat has issues and used to chase his tail. But then he started literally attacking it and biting it to pieces until it bled and got all nasty! Long story short I had to pay like $600 to get half his tail amputated so he couldn't reach it anymore. He's doing great now, but $600 out of my pocket because he wanted to attack his darn tail!

Ohhh it's so nice to laugh about that now!:drinker:

My poor cat has a stubby tail due to abuse before I got her. However, my other cat never chased her tail, but when she laid down, she would put her paw over it, like holding it down. It made me laugh because I would think "where the heck do you think it's going if you DON'T hold it down???"

sometimes dogs do it if they are having issues going poop. It is sad. Same with when they sit funny or rub their bum on the floor.

    Haha my dog does this!

Then when he's caught his tail, he'll lie down on the floor with it in his mouth, and proceed to lick/chew on it.

My dog had her tail clipped (got her after they already did it ::frown:) so she doesn't chase it, but sometimes when she farts she snaps around and looks at her butt like, "What was that?!?!" It's the cutest thing.

Oh, I wonder if the reason my dog has been rubbing her bum on the floor a lot less is because I have been taking her for longer walks. She hasn't ever chased her tail though. She does the round and round thing when she goes to lay down, but that's different.

It itches... Try itching it for them... Sometimes they nervous, like people who bite their nails when their nervous. One of my cats (She was persian and siamese) she kept licking her back until the fur came off, and then cause a problem with her skin. We treated it with neosporin and bandage and a dog sweater over that. Turns out she was allergic to some of the food we gave her. Made her itch. If theres alot of comotion in the household, you can nerve your animals out, that can cause nervous biting. I think some do it for fun thou. Maybe they need a friend to play with.
