What is this process of weight loss?

I was thinking about it. Basically, we are trying to get our body to work harder to extract the energy out of our fat cells, shrinking them and causing us to become more fit, thinner.

At the same time, we are not going overboard eating so that when our bodies DO need energy, then can take it from our own cells, instead of taking it out of our gut and storing what we didn't need.

We all know that process. It ends with the fatty acids from the fat cells being utilized to fuel the body and the waste products being excreted in urine and by exhaling carbon dioxide.

So aren't we just eating ourselves? Is that why it is painful? Maybe it's just painful to me, but is that why it is so hard?
