A Bargain For $50

My hubbie Ed (aka Special Ed) has been so supportive of everything that I do. Losing weight is no exception. He is always looking for things that might please me or make life easier for Mama. That's what he calls me.

Yesterday...while getting to know some of our neighbors in the local swimming pool, he met a woman with something for sale. Yes, she was 'friendly'; but this wasn't THAT KIND OF SALE.

This was an older lady with a 'nearly new' stationary bicycle that cost her about $300. She had hoped to place an ad to sell the bike for $100; but she told Ed that she needed the money and would take $50, if she could get it right away.

Ed told the woman that he would have to talk to Mama about the bike, because he knew that our budget was tight for this month. This morning, Ed went to the woman's house and confirmed that that this was indeed a VERY NICE piece of equipment that looked BRAND NEW. He is going back this afternoon with the cash and to pick up our new bike.

I may not be able to ride it, until my knee replacement surgery is done; but it will be good to have this great bike. This is just the right exercise device and highly recommended for post-op knee replacement patients.

I will have it close at hand and not have to go to some gym do my post-op workouts. It will also be great during the winter here in the high desert, when we get freezing temperatures and snow. I can still ride a bike without risking my health in bad weather.

I know just where I want to put the bike. There is space in our large master bedroom; and if I face it toward the TV, I can ride and watch TV at the same time. That will help to keep me on the bike longer.

Ed is thinking that he might even like to use the stationary bike, when the weather gets bad. However...I am not going to let him attach flags to this bike, like he did to his own crazy, recumbent bike that he created recently from miscellaneous parts of 3 bikes.

They don't call him Special Ed for nothing.

    Recumbant bikes scare the BeJazus out of me! Many riders aren't smart enough to put tall flags on them, so when they move out of the bike lanes to cross traffic they are not always easily spotted. Special Ed may be 'special', but he is wise! Glad you got the exercise bike, it will make things easier after knee replacement, but do not try it before getting the okay from the Dr and physical therapist! Doing too much, too fast only makes things worse. (Yes, that was the sad voice of experience you just heard.) Take care and be well.

    Ed is so thoughtful. I love the recumbent bike he made, too. My Dad was like that, finding things and reworking them .

    Enjoy! Cycling is so great, no impact, yet tons of cardio. I don't know for sure, so definitely talk to your doctors, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could ride it now and get that heart all the more ready for surgery.

    Good luck and enjoy, cycling is one the most important things for enjoyment in my life, and I'm so glad that it is exercise too.

    I have a great doctor and surgeon who would both have a fit, if they found out that I was doing anything foolish with my knees right now. I am less than 20 pounds away from qualifying for those knee surgeries with orders to stay 'off my knees' and 'in my wheelchair', because I am at high risk for green stick fractures at the moment. I don't stand without my walker, and even that can be painful.

    The stationary bike will be for AFTER surgery only. I will be waiting for my instruction from the physical therapy folks; but I'll bet they will be happy to hear that I have this bike at home.

    As for my hubbie...Pastor Special Ed is loved by all, most especially me. He is everybody's friend, and he manages to make everyone smile with his fun way of dealing with life. He definitely keeps my life interesting.

    Our bargain cost any additional $25. When Ed went to pick up the bike, the woman said that her husband was angry with her for only getting $50 for the bike. :huh:

    Ever the peacemaker, Ed asked her, "How much does he want?"

    She told him that her husband wanted at least $75, or he wanted to just keep the bike." Ed told her okay and came home to get more money from Mama. He was short by $5.

    Yes, you or I would have said, "We had a deal. This is all I've got. Take it or leave it."; but Pastor Special Ed could not bear to see the woman and her husband upset over something like a few dollars.

    The bike ended up costing us $75, but it is still a good deal. Ed and I know that. We are sorry that it caused a family fight. Some men make better husbands; and I know that I am very lucky, because I have 'the best one for me'. :heart:

    Ed wanted me to see how it works, but he didn't go for a ride yet. This big thing will be moving to the bedroom later; but for now, it is in the far corner of our living room. I will not let it stay there.

    I don't know anything about stationary bikes, but I am hoping Pro Form is a good brand. Apparently, it has some kind of computer built in and a plug in for Ipod...which means nothing to me, because I don't have an Ipod.

    Is Mama happy? :love: You can be sure of that, even though I can't even use this wonderful machine, until after my surgery. I couldn't even get my feet onto the pedal. It hurt to even try.

    Our girl Bailey does NOT like that bike at all. She growled and barked at it. She was apparently worried about Mama getting so close to 'THAT THING'. :noway:

    Love, love, love that recumbent! It is wonderful to see a couple obviously so in love. Congrats on all your success so far--I'll bet your doctor is going to be thrilled with your progress.

    Congrats on the new bikes for both you and Ed!

    My son in law would love the bike Special Ed created. One of his jobs is with Sports Authority putting bikes together. He's their top tech there. Go Nelson!

    I love the added basket and rack for storage. John and I love bike riding too. We pack a lunch or dinner and go to the park with our bikes.

    And both the American Flag and the Christian Flag. Way to go Pastor Ed!

    And Rose the stationary bike will be all the more an incentive to get the 20 lbs off!

    Where do you two live with all the snow and high dessert? We're in Clearwater, Florida.

    Lmao! That is a great deal! I had bad knee pain years back and I went to a physical therapist. He told me to do the recumbent bike. I rode it for a few months consistently, and my knee pain severely improved. I agree with you, that it will be great after your surgery :)

    Last time we went to Vegas I met a woman with something for sale for $50 but my wife wasn't nearly as supportive. Special Ed is a very fortunate man.

    Where do you two live with all the snow and high dessert? We're in Clearwater, Florida.

    Ed and I are living Apple Valley, California...near Victorville in the Mojave Desert area. However, our small 55+ community is called Jess Ranch. The grass and trees of Jess Ranch make it feel like an oasis in the middle of the desert. We got up to 108 degrees yesterday; but in the winter, the 4200 feet above sea level valley gets snow and very cold, even when there is no snow.
