I suspect NSV's go in "motivation & support" or "success" stories but this is neither. I'm not seeking support or motivation, nor have I "succeeded" at anything, but it is rather fitness related so I chose this section. Hope you can see why.
I've been focusing on stair workouts ever since someone on my FL said going up stairs for 10 minutes burns 200 calories. I liked the efficiency of that and also know stairs work the upper legs which is a point of interest for me.
So yesterday on an excursion to Universal Studios Hollywood they have super long escalators with some stairs next to them. After passively taking the escalators down and then standing in a long line I was getting fidgety. After enjoying the exciting and adrenaline pumping rides I was primed.
On the way up I told hubby I'm gonna go up the stairs and pointed to others doing it so he wouldn't get too scared about my confidence in proclaiming that he could see it's doable. He tried to discourage/warn me by saying "THEY can't even do it----and they're kids!" Noting that they were teens or early twenties.
I said, I can do it, calmly and upon disboarding the escalator at the next landing I quietly walked over to the stairs as he and my son reboarded the next escalator. I did the stairs in my usual pace and beat the escalator up...then I waited for him being silly, tapping my foot and staring at my watch.
His words said "What are you looking at your watch for we aren't late for anything" as if to negate what I had just done. His eyes said "Holy hell, I am just truly not dealing with the same broken woman anymore."
His silence later in the day when I decided to do this again with several flights continuously said the most. It said to me "I now have confidence in my wife and her healed body and will no longer worry or chime in with fears when she tells me she can do something. The time for treating her like a fragile piece of glass due to her injury is over." The end.

this is fantastic!0 -
Congrats!
There is something very satisfying with taking the stairs whilst others take the escalator. It feels metaphorically significant somehow. Something to do with the escalator being dependence and the stairs being independence.0 -

i found some youtube videos that show the escalators I'm referring to, in case you can tell how many flights each set is by eyeballing it. I cannot, I have terrible depth perception. I will frequently say something is so and so feet long, only to be corrected. Except inches, I know me some inches. I've got the inches down pat. I definitely know the difference between 6 inches versus 7 inches versus 9.

anyhow, i digress here's the youtube of it.

disclaimer: noone in this vid is me or anyone I know, and i went yesterday so yeah there was no wreath at the time.0 -

Great achievement!0 -

found a pic. so going up you can see two tunnels representing the stairs/escalators, i think there are actually 3 or 4 tho?0 -

Great achievement!
LOL thanks. I didn't run though, even though it felt like I could have. I was all amped up on real coffee, mimosas, and a steak and eggs breakfast! haha. Really I thought I should just walk because I knew i was going fast enough to beat the escalator up there and didn't want my already concerned husband to find me huffing and puffing up there. This way he found me calm, cool and collected. with not a hair out of place. lol.0 -
That is awesome. It's amazing how simple things like running for a bus or going up stairs is a reminder of our progress.

You are such a thoughtful wife.
I can see from the pic that the stairs were quite a climb. I'm impressed, not only by the climb but that you were able to complete it without getting winded!0 -

Not always...sometimes I am a meanie who lets him cook his own damned paleo food since I did not approve of that message and have stubbornly refused to join his ranks. There's an underlying current of competitiveness at play here too. He did stare at my thighs trying to summon his x-ray vision when I did the final set and I felt like I could read his mind thinking .oO(oh, so that's why she hasn't lost weight that fast even though from the cheap seats she seems to be starving herself. it's probably going on as muscle weight and that must be going to her thighs if she can do stairs like a boss now. maybe she isn't starving herself after all.)0 -
Just wanted to update this thread. I did this again on Friday. Same stairs, same place. Too full from a burger and pizza though, not as fun or easy. Plus it was HOT out. plus I didn't pace myself. So I used the escalators for the final set. I think it's important to know when to say when though, so I'm not ashamed. :frown:0

OH and I took my own picture of the stairs this time, with me in front of them from a distance since I planned to go up them after our meal since our time at the bottom had concluded. If I can figure out this technology stuff I'll post it. It's on my real camera though, not my phone .
I had to rely on this kind of thinking about 80% through as I pushed on my thighs with my hands to get those last few stairs out of the way. That's when I knew I had eaten too much too immediately before.0
