Hey guys, I have been experiencing a plateau for the past 2 weeks....my choices havn't been amazing and I'm worried that this plateau is going to push me off the rails. I had my first plateau about 6 weeks ago and it lasted nearly 4 weeks and then I managed to drop nearly 4lbs.

I jog for 40 - 50 minutes 4 - 5 times a week and I'm wondering if some strength training could help me get through this second plateau :grumble:

I have 2.5 kilo weights and would like to use them to help tone up my figure. I have my abs workout pretty much sussed but could anyone advise me on some muscle crunching exercises I can do with my 2.5 kilo weights?

Thanks in advance

I would say yes, and it is recommended that you change up your workout routine every 4-6 weeks to keep your body guessing. So you could also change up the jogging and add in a day or 2 of HIIT instead or try biking or swimming.
  • Some long distance runners hit a plateau as they are running long distances. One long distance runner told me that; when she is in the middle of a long run and her mind tells her to quit, she says to herself, "I am a fighter"....This has help her get past the plateau feelings, enabling her to keep going..

Are you only running? If that is your only form of cardio, your body is probably adapting. Strength may help, but when I hit my plateau, I just did higher intensity on my regular workouts, and then threw in some new stuff (30 Day Shred, dancing, biking) and I started dropping weight consistently again. Your body will adapt if you are doing the same thing all the time. Try throwing in something different a couple times a week :)

If you're doing the right things don't just use your scales as a guide. Take measurements too - hip, waist, thighs etc. I have lost inches in the past week but the scale shows a lb gain.

she's right on ,you're body has adapted to the runs, change it up,do something totally different, and weight training would definitely be different, add in some supersets and stuff,if you're interested I could send you a copy of a boot camp routine that my wife and I did for a couple of months early summer that was very good for us.

Steady-state jogging is probably the culprit. Eric has it correct. HIIT (high intensity interval training) is a great plateau buster. It's also a good idea (as other posters stated) to change your routine a bit. It also makes workouts fun and interesting!

Thank you everyone for valuable responses. I am going to get the tape out this evening and have a bit of a measurement session! My eating habits have not been as good as they have been and this will be changed tomorrow. Not sure whether looming TOM may be causing me to reach for not so healthy foods...but tomorrow is another day!

I will make sure my water intake is consistent and try and get a new form of exercise into my regime. I very often do interval training during my workouts and these helped me drop those 4lbs a few weeks back.

Thank you tex43...I am going to inbox you now to get the information!

    Thanks again everyone!
