Eating times of the day

There are times, when even when I am done eating, I still have about 200 calories left in my budget, but it will be 10 at night. Does the time of day that you eat matter? I know there are people who say that if you eat right before you go to bed, you are just going to gain more weight that way. Are there certain things that I should stay away from when eating that late?

Thank you all!!!

It makes no difference what time of day you eat. I eat most of my food after 7pm and dropped below 14% bodyfat doing that. The whole eating before bed is bad thing, is a myth, little more and there have been endless topics on this started recently. A search would have bought them up. :)
  • Sorry, I am new to this.

    Thank you for the response!

I don't like eating before bed because it gives me indigestion.

The only issue with eating late is of you aren't waking up hungry. Don't eat just because you have calories left, eat because you are hungry (or maybe because you have room for the rare treat). Also, I find that eating my biggest meal at breakfast, then a medium size meal at lunch, followed by a small dinner helps me not have left over calories late at night.
  • That's the funny part, when I do eat before I go to bed, I tend to be even hungrier than I am if I don't eat before I go to bed. Is that odd?

I think this dependson the person as if I eat after 7pm, I gain the next day so I stop by 4pm! I've been at this game so many times that I know what works for me. But everyone should do what works for them. Try eating at different times and different combinations of foods to see what works for you!

    no

it depends on energy balance, it doesn't matter what you THINK works for you. eating less than your usage will result in energy lost whether its fat or muscle

Explain because I eat the same thing everyday....if I eat after 7 pm I gain. So tell me how I must not be seeing the scale correctly. I eat 1200 cals a day (usually less) and I work out and burn up to 1000 cals a day (I don't eat back my burned cals). I've been losing 2 pounds a week. IF I eat after 7pm, I do not lose weight.

It very likely has to do with differences in internal contents that are not fat mass, such as fluids and food volume in your system. If you weigh yourself first thing in the AM for example, nights where you eat large meals before bed you could potentially have additional weight from the food moving through your system.

Basically the person who is disagreeing with you is correct but he is referring to actual tissue weight and not internal contents.

You can really eat those calories of yours whenever you want and it will not impair fat loss over time.

The differences that you may be showing on the scale given the same energy intake (total cals are held constant) are not differences in fat loss.

Wow, just wow. SideSteel already covered the whole weight gain issue. What I want to know is, why in the heck are you only netting 200 calories or less a day?! That is so incredibly unhealthy it's unbelievable. Clearly what you're doing isn't working in the long term. You said you've "been at this game so many times", so don't you think that the fact that you have yet to be able to keep the weight off long term says something about the way you are losing it? I mean really, the way you are going about this, no one would be able to sustain that sort of lifestyle. Your body needs fuel, and you are severely depriving it. Honestly not trying to sound rude or mean, it's just really concerning.

Edited to add to the OP, no, time of day has no bearing on weight loss...for anyone.

Yeah the last times I ate 500 a day and exercised as much and lost alot quicker...so I'm willing to go up to 1200. When I go up in calories I gain weight. Good luck to you all and do what works for you.

Yep, and you will gain weight any time you try and eat remotely normally because you have taken such drastic and downright damaging measures to lose weight, messing up your metabolism totally, hence your gaining weight if you eat anything more. I mean, you think doing more of the same thing is going to magically give you longterm weight loss? You are just digging your own grave.

I have a similar problem. The more calories I take in or the bigger then dinner I have, the hungrier I am the next morning! I could go all day without eating and not be hungry the next day, but eat a big meal and I want more tomorrow!

If I have extra calories, I only eat if I'm hungry. If I'm not hungry, I just leave them.

And yes, certain things digest easier than others. Toasted anything (crackers, toast) digests pretty well. Fruits are always a good bet. Veggie juice (freshly juiced, of course) is excellent; I did it when heartburn from my last pregnancy wouldn't let me eat at night and I needed more calories. Or try 100% fruit juice with a scoop of wheat grass. Yum!

If your goal is just weight loss it doesn't matter what time of day you eat.

If your goal is optimal health and you want the most efficient repair mode while sleeping, then don't eat a few hours before bed. Active digestion can impair sleep quality and wastes energy that your body could be using to repair your organs.

I stopped eating late and it has effectively cured my 'delayed sleep phase syndrome' which the doctors told me was incurable. I'm finally falling asleep before midnight, getting deep sleep, and waking up before my alarm instead of sleeping in or sleeping through my alarm. I'm sleeping 7-8 solid hours instead of 10-12 broken unrestful hours. Waking up refreshed instead of feeling like i was run over by a truck. Finally free of what felt like a chronic 'food hangover' for years. :)

I usually don't eat anything later than 5pm. This works for me. If you don't suffer the same problems i did, then it probably won't matter to you when you eat. If you can eat before bed and still get quality sleep, that's great. But if you are struggling to get quality sleep, understand that chronic lack of good sleep and repair will lead to slowing of the metabolism and increased risk of diseases.

So yeah. Eat when you want. If it makes you feel terrible, adjust accordingly until you no longer feel terrible. :) Listen to your body. Take my advice with a grain of salt (or not if you're restricting your sodium levels). :)

Meal timing is irrelevant. It's just a matter of calories in vs calories out.
