I read a quote and was wondering what others thought of it, it went "The key to eating healthy?? Avoid any food that has a TV commercial." I'm not sure if its 100% true but was wondering what others thought??

Probably a decent sorting. Except if count commercials for grocery stores.0

I could see where this would be applicable (I don't recall the last advertising I saw for carrots or apples, now that I'm thinking about it) but then my Fiber One bars and Special K are out, as is my rice, beans and chicken (which are all major staples in my diet).
Therefore, I am choosing to disagree.
(I look forward to reading the other responses.)0 -
What about milk & eggs? I see commercials for those all the time. Water too.
I call BS.0 -

That would mean a healthy diet would exclude those foods that are advertised, with no regards to context and dosage. Also things like beef, pork, veggies etc are advertised0

I totally agree with that!0

Yeah, that's why I didn't think it was totally accurate...0 -
Avocados from Mexico has it's own commercial. Guess we should cut out Avocados, they're fatty anyways.0

In my area, at least, there is no tv commercial about organic food. That's the most of my diet.0

Nothing wrong with fat, especially unsaturated fat.0 -
"Healthy" eating can include anything in moderation, so I think it's stupid.0

Since I work in the marketing industry, I say no.0

LOL'd hard at your avi. That looks like my before pic too!0 -
So . . . . cigarettes are out then?0
-
I think, if you look at it as a "general" idea, the meaning has a good ideat. But, only as a generality. I just saw a commercial for apples, water, and filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables.0

Pretty much... tends to be how I look at most food...0

What if you don't watch TV?0

Only if you are eating them!!!!0 -

we don't have commercials in Canada for cigarettes.... so by that it is all good! lol0

Some of the commercials on the local channels here are for locally grown food.
Even though the actors are not profesionals the marketing is quite clever. Makes you want to rush out and buy snap peas and purple potatoes.0 -
"The incredible, edible egg."
"Beef, it's what's for dinner."
"Got milk?"
The problem with generalizations is that there's always something out there to shatter them.

I believe it's true, so I stopped watching TV.0

Well then no more grapes or apples or bananas. I dont' know where you guys up above are from where you're posting that you never see fruits and veggies advertised but we do all the time in NH...maybe cause it's cold and once it gets warm we magically all want to have an apple...I don't know but that would cut out A LOT of healthy foods too...I don't think I'd be able to eat anymore...at all...0

The one I read was "avoid any food that has a mascot"0

Stupid quote. No need to avoid ANY food.0

yeah but raisins have a mascot and those aren't ALL bad for you. Oatmeal has a mascot and that isnt' bad for you as long as you arent' buying the flavored prepackages stuff. I think these people making these quotes are just spewing out their *kitten*. A box of raisins isn't going to send someone's health crumbling to the ground.0 -
I actually like that quote a lot. Usually food is advertised because some company out there put some effort into creating a food product (usually that means the food is processed) and is aiming to profit from that investment. Or, perhaps the ads are in support of an industry in general (think milk, beef, etc.) and the more I learn about the large food based industry groups, the less I believe they actually care about *my* long term health. Further, advertising generally isn't spent in circumstances where there are a large number of suppliers of largely homogenous products (think carrots, strawberries, etc). If you're at a grocery store picking out some apples, do you really spend the time to figure out who grew them? And if you learned that xyz farm in Washington state grew them, would it matter to you? Would it make sense for xyz farm to go on a big marketing blitz and spend millions on ads to convince you to look for their apples? Probably not.
As a side note, I do usually look for country of origin on produce, and I actually participate in a local, organic CSA - but that's more because I aim to eat locally as much as possible out of my desire to reduce use of fuel, etc. That has nothing to do with advertising.0 -
Actually, i think i will always avoid pork rinds, but are they considered food? yuck!0
