Finding "Goal Weight"

Hey folks,
How does one find out their goal weight? Is it something I need to look at later?
Currently, according to BMI (which is trash) I am supposed to weigh 180 pounds to be considered a normal BMI. However, that is pretty much impossible. I have used some equipment and according to it I have 109 pounds of fat in my body and I currently weigh 309. That means that if I were to lose every pound of fat and gain 0 muscle, I would weigh 200. Now we know that 0% fat isn't possible either.
So should I be shooting for 250? That would mean if I weighed 250 and lost 59 pounds of fat, I would be at a healthy BF% of 20%. Is this what I shoot for? But then I wouldn't be planning on gaining muscle which I am.
Should I just NOT have a goal?

Hi! I found my goal weight by looking at a height/weight chart...and it's from a credible source.

How tall are you? There's fluctuation (about 20 lbs) between everyone's ideal weight...probably for the muscle/fat ratios that you were talking about.
Hope all is well!0 -
BMI is complete BS. I'm 5'-10" and one indicates that I should be 165 lbs. I weighed that when I was a freshman in HS. I do believe you should still have a goal weight. I understand your questioning it, I started MFP at 204 and the weight has been up and down due to weight lifting and the building of muscle. I have just now started dropping weight again. For a period I did not use the scale to monitor progress, just my clothes. Best of Luck man.0

Lean body mass will also diminish... the water, blood, skin, etc... are part of lean body mass and these will decrease as you lose weight. However, you most likely will have to figure out what the right weight is for you as you get closer to that weight by focusing on body fat percentage and fitness level rather than the number on the scale. I originally set a goal of 212.5 pounds because it was half of my 425... I now have dropped under 260 and can see that I will likely be able to get to around 200 pounds. I used to be 210 and six percent body fat as a young twenty something and although I will probably not be back to that I am simply aiming to be at a low body fat percentage, around ten, and be fit enough to do the activities that I would like to do.0

Think back to a time in your life when you thought you looked great and you felt comfortable in your skin; aim for that---simple!0

My husband goes to a trainer/nutritionist guy who runs a gym and sells supplements. He told the guy what the doctors said, that hey want him to be down to 150 lbs. The guy did the body fit test on him, measuring percentage of body fat and muscle mass, said there was no way he could get down to that. My husband would actually have to lose muscle mass, so he just began to shoot for a body fat percentage.
I am just going for when I feel healthy and don't look too thin. Am hoping to add muscle to boot.0 -
I'm 5'8", 178 lbs. Currently wear size 8-10. My ideal weight is supposedly 147 lbs. Much much too low for me. I am big boned. I am shooting for 160 lbs. And that may be too small. As I get closer to that number I will see how I feel. If I am happy before that goal then I will stop there. My BMI right now is about 126. I want to get under 125 at least. That is my goal.0
