Actually, there isn't a secret to weight loss. I have found that counting calories and working out is the way to go! Burning more calories than you consume a day has worked for me. You have to really want to make a life change. I don't say i'm on a diet, I have made a life change to eat for nourishment and work out to tone and lose weight. If I can do this ANYONE can!.....I have tried just about every diet out there or weight loss program and yes I did lose some weight but, the weight always came back with a vengance!...LOL MFP has given me the tools I need to succeed and I am so happy I decided to make a change for myself and my family. Good Luck!0

When you set up your MFP account it already calculated your deficit into your daily goal.0 -
Eat at a deficit.
Make sure you're logging accurately - A food scale is a great tool for this.
Make sure you aren't over estimating your calorie burns - You might want to look into getting a heart rate monitor.0 -

This confuses me too. I guess MFP builds in your BMR when it figures out your calories. So, any extra calories burned should be eaten??? IDK so confusing. I can't wrap my brain around MFP philosophy. I log my food sync it with my Bodymedia arm band and use the deficit there to make sure I am on track to keep losing 2lbs a week. So far it has worked.0 -
You don't have to eat back the calories you burn if you don't want to......I usually eat 100 calories under my goal and burn about 600 calories a day when I go to the gym....I only eat the calories I burn when I have a special dinner to go to, I call it my cheat day. This way I don't feel restricted and I am able to continue the rest of the week. I have also done the eat more weight less program and it really helped me when my weight loss stopped for a couple of weeks and it put me back on track....0

Your body is burning calories while you're awake, while you're asleep, while you're working, while you're watching TV, etc. When people say that you need to eat fewer calories than you burn, they mean eating less than your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). You can google plenty of calculators to find what your body burns in a day.0 -
You eat back the calories you burn up to a certain point based on your weight loss goals. Please read "In Place of a Road Map"0

Secret... Calories in < Calories burned. It really is this simple if you give your body the nutirents to feed itself.0

Sorry, I just found the link for you: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/975025-in-place-of-a-road-map-short-n-sweet
1) Figure out your BMR.
2) Figure out your TDEE.
3) Eat calories between your BMR and TDEE each day and you will lose weight.
Remember that your TDEE changes depending on what exercises you do each day. Most people use the TDEE - 20% or TDEE - 10% depending on how much they want to lose. THIS is the healthy way.0 -
Where can I get a heart rate monitor? Is there an app on the Iphone for this?0

MFP is actually really simple.
(1) you enter your data, MFP calculates a daily calorie goal for you- this is you NET calories you need to have to lose weight steadily and safely. How fast you will lose depends on how much you have to lose and other factors.
(2) when you exercise, you are burning calories. In order to continue to hit your "net caloric goal" you need to eat how much you burned. You don't need to exercise to lose weight.
(3) You *should* exercise tho.... it is good for your body (lymph system, cardiovascular system, mental health); it also helps to make sure that the weight you lose is more fat and less muscle. If you just eat at a deficit and don't exercise, you will lose a lot of muscle mass too. In addition, when you exercise, you get to eat more, which makes the whole caloric goal easier to hit.
.....
then there is an entirely different way to go about this whole thing that a lot of folks here advocate for. This is eating based on your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). TDEE is basically how much you should eat, given how much you exercise, to maintain your current weight. To lose weight, you eat TDEE-20% (the percent may need to be different for you depending on your goals). When you eat based on TDEE, you do not get to "eat" exercise calories on top of your daily goal. Your daily goal already accounts for exercise.
For a new person at this, I advise using MFP's set up as I think it is less confusing in the beginning and also provides motivation to exercise if you aren't already consistent with that.0 -

The SECRET is never giving up. It's consistency. It's working out and logging your food even when you don't feel like it. It's forgiving yourself when you make mistakes and getting back on the damn horse.
And... tapeworms. Lots of tapeworms.0 -

I like this! Minus the tapeworms.... (shudders).
It's all very confusing but the simplest way to do it is to just be more aware of what you put into your body and try to get up and get moving. I know NOTHING about TDEE or BMR or XYZ, I just know that I need to eat 1200 calories a day (and try to keep all of those calories clean) exercise at least 30 mins a day and just keep plowing through the days. The first couple of months will be slow going, you may not see the results right away so take your measurements, you will be surprised that you have lost inches!
Don't dwell on mistakes just suck it up and move on. A cookie or donut doesn't and SHOULDN'T derail you. And just wanting to make a change and get healthy. You have to really want it. Good luck to you!0 -
In the past I've had tremendous success cutting out all added sugars and limiting processed foods. The weight melted off so fast my family staged an intervention (I had lost almost 100 pounds). I was eating plenty, just not sugar or processed foods. They thought I was starving myself, but I wasn't.
I tried to go back to that eating style recently and found it impossible. I'm older now and more set in my ways. I fall of the wagon very quickly each time I try.
Logging food has been the only thing I've been able to commit to in recent years. I'm starting to keep a close eye on the nutritional values of the foods I eat. Some things, like protein bars and canned soups, have tons of added sugar. They just aren't worth it, which you realize when you look at how they effect your tracker stats. So MYP is sort of retraining me to eat like I used to by "exposing" how awful the foods are I've been eating.
Now, if only I had my old metabolism too..0 -
Oh, and I didn't eat out or have "cheat days" very often (may once every few months).
Some people build in cheat days into their week, but I'm beginning to question the wisdom of this. When you have a cheat day, you can easily go overboard and offset your whole week's worth of work. But more importantly, when you "cheat" you usually consume a bunch of sugar and refined carbs, which throws your blood sugar and hormones completely out of whack. Your body needs a long time to recover from this and reverse the chronic inflammation it causes. Then, by the time your recover, its time for another cheat day!. This also starts the addiction cycle over, which can negatively impact the food choices you make for several days. I am going to limit cheat days to the "very rarely" category.
But everyone is right on here: just keep trying no matter how many times your fall off the horse. Get back up and keep going ASAP!0 -
I have rejoined MFP and I have started logging my food and exercise to aid my weight loss war
I was reading through post and came across your reply
Eat at a deficit and Make sure you're logging accurately
What you say is the plain and simple truth. Its what we should all aim for
good luck everyone let battle commence in our war with fat0 -

EXACTLY!!! You have to get it straight in your head first and foremost!!! Then I also look at it as a lifestyle change! Even if you lose it, if you go back to your old habits, the weight will come back! It is not a diet! Diet to most people means a temporary change! And I'm not saying you have to eat low calories, every day for the rest of your life, but you have to eat sensibly! MFP is exactly the tool I needed as well... I try to log as I'm going through the day so I don't get to the end of the day and find out I overate on calories! Also, if you can make it a family change, it makes it easier! My husband and kids are doing this with me and we are all doing pretty good together! Good luck in your journey! I look forward to hearing of your progress! Just remember, stay positive and take it one day at a time! You didn't put weight on overnight and you're not going to lose it overnight! And everyone is different! Find what works for you and run with it!!!0
