It's up to you. I train fasted. I feel gross more often than not if I workout after a big meal. And, I workout around 5 am, so I don't want to get up any earlier than I have to to eat, then give it 20-30 minutes before working out. It works for me. If I felt sh!tty during my workouts or weak on a regular basis, I'd likely figure out a way to eat before hand. Sometimes I might have a shake if I'm feeling extra hungry, but that's fairly rare.

I generally workout fasted unless I'm starving. Then I'll have something like cheese. The hotter it is, the less food I can tolerate. YMMV.

I have read that there are some benefits to working out fasted.
  • This just happened to me yesterday after a work out. I had a decent amount of protein for breakfast. I went to work out and after.. I still wasn't hungry. I didn't want to force it but I was going out for a walk after so I was worried (too much influence once one steps out of the house hungry). But so I did. And I was waiting and waiting to feel some sort of hunger, lack of energy, something.. but nope. Looks like this is what you're talking about, fasting while walking.

I think the best is to listen to our body. If our body is not hungry and our muscles aren't lacking the appropriate nutrition, trust your instinct. Go for that walk. If you feel anything, drink some water first. After that, maybe find a small bite the size of half your palm and see if that helps for a bit. Sometimes you might need something before walking, some other times you might not. Wait until you get home and cook yourself a healthy meal.

I went 5 hours walking and was fine! Protein is a god :D

    Good luck!

I personally like to eat something before working out. If I don't I end up feeling dizzy.

I do a total fast one day a week and replace my regular three mile run with a three mile walk. So I say yes to your question. I'm not a scientist, bioligist, doctor, nutritionist or anything else. So my opinion holds absolutely no weight.

I do calisthenics and swim on my lunch break fasted. Afterwards I gorge myself. Works for me :)

I have read you should not workout on an empty stomach. You are suppose to eat something within 45 minutes before working out to optimize your energy for the workout, and for optimal weight loss. I'll see if I can find the article online, and send you a link...It was in one of my journals.

Here this is not the article I read, but it is very similar in thought process of the one I read.... http://www.fitness19.com/should-you-work-out-on-an-empty-stomach/

I'll always do cardio fasted or semi-fasted. I won't eat within about 3 hours of having to do cardio.

For strength training, I'll generally eat something about an hour before the workout. However, if I miss that window, I won't eat, no matter how hungry I am. Working out on a full stomach is pure torture for me. Then there's Saturdays. On Saturdays, I have an appointment with my trainer at 7:30a. I roll out of bed at about 7:15 and haul *kitten* to the gym. No way am I getting up early just to eat.

I run fasted on the majority of my morning runs. I also will occasionally do my upper body workouts fasted though that's more infrequent. I cannot, however, get through my deadlifts and squats workouts fasted. Do what works for you. As long as you get the nutrition you need at some point during the day it really doesn't matter, unless it effects your performance.

As for the warnings against it, that's an old belief and not supported by recent studies.

    Some Data:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23723099 Interval training in the fed or fasted state improves body composition and muscle oxidative capacity in overweight women.

Conclusion: Short-term low-volume HIT is a time-efficient strategy to improve body composition and muscle oxidative capacity in overweight/obese women, but fed- versus fasted-state training does not alter this response.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23617897 Effect of fed- versus fasted state resistance training during Ramadan on body composition and selected metabolic parameters in bodybuilders.

Conclusion: Hypertrophic training in a fasted or in a fed state during Ramadan does not affect body mass and body composition of bodybuilders. Additionally, Ramadan fasting induced changes in urinary and some biochemical parameters, but these changes were not different according to when the training occurred.

I can;t dig it up right now, but I also recall an article that said for elite male athletes training fasted is far more beneficial than training fed.

is the OP just wondering about walking?

when i go for my 30 min walk, it doesnt matter if I do it before my lunch or after my lunch. I feel the same.

if we are talking about HIIT, then I def. dont want to have a full belly.

I run fasted, weight train fasted as well. I'm usually fasted for about 14 hours or so and it works for me (i'm doing IF and have been for over a year) hitting PR's doing 5x5 and loving it. if i eat before training i want to curl up in the fetal position below the squat rack and sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep

my focus and energy are on point consistently for me. i take BCAA's in the morning with my coffee and that's it, drink some water and i'm good to go

i believe it's personal preference, as long as you are getting the calories you need daily to support your goals go for it

edit: once in a while i do run in the evenings, so i've eaten about 4 hours beforehand, i do notice i'm more sluggish and feel heavy and slow

There have been studies that showed a correlation with fasted morning cardio and fat reduction. I think that they're interesting but I wouldn't rely on that fact of being fasted when working out to be your magic bullet. Eat at a reasonable calorie deficit and keep walking. If you can do it fasted and want to, then great. If you don't, then I wouldn't worry about it. Just my 2 cents.
