Poor choices of exercises

The list of possible exercises is woefully lacking. Basic movements like power cleans are not even an option, and the inability to enter in my proper exercise movements and weight makes it that much more difficult to get an accurate calorie count. Please update your list of exercises to better reflect the great diversity of exercises in the world. Currently the myfitnesspal.com exercise list is pathetic to the point of being completely useless.

    Uhhhhhh......

Not sure if you know this but the exercise database is built by members. If your exercise isn't on the list add it, that's how the others got there. Same thing with the food database.

I would just track the calories burned on MFP. The lift tracking is very not user friendly. I'd suggest Fitocracy or make your own Excel spreadsheet.

I don't use myfitnesspal to track exercise, it's not user friendly at all and tends to over calculate the calories burned. I do love fitocracy where you're given a point system instead of a calorie system, and I use my fitbit linked to myfitnesspal, so I can see exact numbers. Just a personal preference though of course.

I use a HRM and put my own in. Very accurate as far as I am concerned!

You're right. You should ask for a refund.

There's little consensus on how many calories weight lifting burns, never mind specific exercises like power cleans.

Use the cardio entry for 'weight training' as a rough estimate of what you burn. Unless you go balls to the wall super-setting compound lifts for an hour it's not going to be a big number anyway.

If you want to see a new exercise in the strength section, then as others say - just add it yourself. It's a community maintained database.

I wanted an accurate number as well. Bought a HRM and was very surprised to see that the MFP estimates are very close, usually within 5% of my HRM reading. I love my HRM.

I use Fitocracy for tracking exercises and MFP for tracking calories.
  • This seems to have upset lots of users, but I would say 49 out of 50 lifts and exercises just aren't available on the exercise portion of this site. Sure, calories might be difficult to calculate for lifting, but there isn't really a crossfit or cross-training option, or any way to mix heavy lifting with sprinting or other things like that. Most lifts aren't available at all. Just saying, when you type in 10 exercises and get 0 results for each one, it shows that something is seriously wrong with that particular feature. Given how useful the user calorie database is, you'd think the exercise database would be more comprehensive.

So, go through and add them if you want them in there. My guess is that the reason they aren't in there is because most lifters use a different app to track their workouts and then just enter it in as cardio on MFP, if they enter it at all. That's what I do.

I use a heart rate monitor. I know it isn't 100% accurate, but it gives me an idea of the intensity of my workouts.

Are you looking in the cardio or the strength training database?

And have you considered just adding them yourself? It's a community maintained database, so it's not really a difficult problem to fix.
