Ice cream.
It's cheaper and tastier than any crap gainer, and can be topped with nuts/chocolate/etc and served on a banana with whipped cream and a cherry on top. With chocolate or - and by or I mean "and" - caramel sauce.
Goddammit, me. Now I want ice cream.0 -
I'm also a hard gainer. The only thing that works is to eat more throughout the day. You need a surplus, and you're not getting it. And do less cardio - or eat more to compensate. Track your calories to see where you're at now - then bump it up 400-500 cals/day for a couple weeks.
Lift weights and/or do bodyweight sets to increase muscle mass.
That said, I like Dymatize ISO 100 whey protein isolate as a supplement. Double scoop it if you want.0 -
my husband used rebuilt mass and whey protein shakes, one each a day with milk. cardio only once a week, weights the rest of the time. also be sure to eat enough calories - he was at 4000 a day at one point! eat at least 1 gram of protein per pound each day (he was close to 2 grams per pound at one point). you can try eating an extra ice cream sundae a day, but the amount of fats and sugar in it may not be the best for your diet; you still want to maintain a healthy diet. my husband gained 40 pounds of muscle and got great definition in under a year.0

What do you think was in the gainer?... A thousand calories of protein?0 -
GOMAD=gallon of milk a day...whole milk =P0

depending on what shake one chooses. some are higher in fat than others, some are lower. some have certain protein profiles, some have different vitamins added. and most do not have enough sugar to cause dangerous insulin spikes in people sensitive to sugar, like an ice cream sundae with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel, etc. would.0 -
40 lbs of muscle in less than a year is insane0

Insulin is not a bad thing, fat is not a bad thing.
If someone's sensitive to sugar, they shouldn't eat ice cream, or drink mass gainers. To anyone who isn't, the ice cream's cheaper.0 -
Optimum Nutrition makes one called "Serious Mass". 1250 calories per shake, 50g protein, 4.5g fat, 250+g carbs and they claim only 20g sugars. I haven't tried it so can't attest to it first-hand, but their products have a solid reputation.0

Back in my 20s I was trying hard to gain weight and spent hundreds of dollars on mega calorie weight gainers. I ended up doing better when I replaced the shakes with real food.
As an added bonus, eating a real food was much more satisfying and much cheaper.0 -
I too have had better results from food than gainers. But I think that's because gainers nutrition profile is too protein heavy for me. (protein needs are based off of lean body mass and I'm a 117lbs female).
Went from 93lbs to 116lbs in a year0 -
I only use shakes when I've been too busy to eat anything substantial during the day. Dinner is always full plates protein, veggies, grains, and dairy. Usually washed down with fruit juice. I switched to homo milk, started drinking beer, eating rice, started buying thicker steaks, less lean ground beef, eating spaghetti with 1lb of it in the sauce between me and my 7 year old lol. Got an *kitten* back and now that I'm 95lbs I'm ready to start really working out again to even it all out and gain more.0

Mass gainer's aren't a great idea IMO. Eat real food, and you will get real results. If you need a huge amount of extra calories try adding nuts, peanut butter, coconut oil, olive oil, etc. to some of your meals0

Exactly. Insulin is not a bad thing, fat is not a bad thing. Eat more. You need to consume more calories than you are burning. Track everything you eat, then eat MORE! Mass gainers aren't magic. Its just a faster way to get your calories in (drinking them). I'd much rather eat my calories, and ice cream is an awesome option (unless you hate eating and would rather drink your calories). Weight training will help you bulk up as well.
And I'm sorry to break the news to you, but it's impossible to gain 40 lbs of pure muscle in a year, unless you are on some serious gear. That thread where the user stated her husband gained 40lbs of muscle can't happen. Most of that weight gain was fat. And trust me, you would need a whole bunch of insulin spikes to gain that amount of weight (exogenous).0 -

Exactly.
Mass gainers are fine, but just realize it's mostly carb powder with some protein powder. Nothing special. And you can make your own for quite a bit cheaper. You dont get many servings out of a 5lb bag of mass gainer.
Whey
Carb powder
Milk
PB
Ice Cream
Other good stuff
just blend and drink. It's the same thing as a mass gainer.0
