It is very tough to eat healthy in New York!!!

But where is the pizza?0

Oh and when I did visit NYC the cupcakes were the size of a cereal bowl. Those things were crazy! Constant access to those would NOT be a good thing.0

Huh, funny--whenever I walk past Magnolia and see that line, none of the people in it look like locals. Now it's beginning to make sense.0 -
haha I went nuts when I first moved here. Pizza place right below me, delicious places on every corner. I've finally learned a little self-control; just a little though0

Wow. Some of you really know how to take a light hearted, slightly amusing thread and turn in into a downer.
One of the great advantages of being a vegetarian in Tokyo is that I can't eat most of the food (due to their obsession with sticking fish in pretty much everything) and their desserts suck. To put in in perspective my favourite dessert in Tokyo is cake from Costco. Yep, that's the best there is.
It does help.
OK, I hear you on the stealth dashi in everything--it does make being veggie difficult (and when I lived in Tokyo I thanked God that I don't have the shellfish allergy the men in my family have). But cake? It's better in Tokyo than in NYC. And I can't imagine how they'd be hiding any fish in it...0 -
move to Canada.0

And another image:
(Yes, I am aware that obesity is correlated with poverty, and this map could just as easily be an income map. But NYC still has considerably lower obesity rates than other parts of the US.)0 -
man i would love to be able to stroll down to Korea Town for dinner tonight.0

Where exactly can you eat? I think it was you that was complaining that Miami had only fried foods too. If not, I apologize, but I really don't think it's that hard to find a balance.0
-
There are also a gazillion places to buy salads here.... and lots of different combinations. Most are healthy as long as you get a lowfat dressing, and maybe cut out cheese or carbs. I have been hating rejecting the free bread that comes with many of them though:)0

Theres delicious tempting food everywhere, that is not an excuse.
very few places on Earth have what NYC offers.
Uh...we have food here, too. What's the difference?
isnt London a world class city? my guess is they have great food selections too. but do you think you can get the same food in Bismarck, ND? the answer is no.
the point of the thread is that places like NYC, London etc...have much more tempting food choices than just about anywhere else.
Ah, I see. Suppose that living in London means it's just normal to me to see foods, both healthy and unhealthy in large quantities, as easy to find.
I think I'll pass on the cakes, though. Not really my thing, although they do look very pretty. [heads off to Japanese restaurant 120 yards away]0 -
Amen sister!0

But...but...mochi. With a giant fresh strawberry inside.
The greatest sweet thing ever invented anywhere.0 -
u can but u won't0

If only there was somewhere to buy fruit in NYC! Alas.
And how lucky for those of us who live outside the mecca that is NYC. I live in Minneapolis, which, as you know, has no delicious food at all. No amazing restaurants, food trucks, or pastry shops. Not a one.
LOL, We actually do NOT have one amazing restaurant, food truck or pastry shop here!! We have lots of "ok" restaurants, and a hotdog cart....0 -

True, you don't even have to have Western cake and Tokyo has great desserts! I may have said this in reply to another post somewhere about strawberry mochi, but if you ever find yourself in Hilo, Hawaii, you must go to Two Ladies Kitchen for strawberry mochi. It is SO. GOOD. They have all sorts of mochi, some of it Americanized (peanut butter mochi, anyone?) but the strawberry mochi is the star. You can't bring it back to the mainland US because of agricultural restrictions, but that's OK, you'll want to eat it immediately anyway.0 -
Should be easier there despite the food porn. Lots of indian and other ethnic foods with great flavors that are also healthy.
Agreed. Despite decadent desserts, there are other more exotic and healthier options here as well.0 -
Last time I was in NYC I lost 8 pounds while I was there (10 days and ate Pizza every single day). But then I walked everywhere and almost always took the stairs at the hotel.
If you really want it, you can make it work.
True, I was thinking the same ~ walk it off0 -
We have the best pizza on the planet here!!!
Slice of NY style pizza (Ray's) = ~600 calories / 25 gr fat
Slice of regular US pizza (Dominos/Pizza Hut) = ~300 calories / 12 gr fat

Yeah, but the only people who eat that stuff are tourists and drunks at 2 am.0 -
I find it easy to eat in NY. There are so many choices that there is always a healthy option. I'm also a creature of habit and go to the same 2 or 3 places for lunch everyday and always get the same thing.0
-
You really thing NYC is the only place in the world with decadent dessert and foods?
I live in podunk Tallahassee, FL, and have a fabulous Indian restaurant and gourmet desserts and the best cheese and stuffed grape leaves you've ever dreamt of less than a mile from my house. I grew up in Elmira, NY, and had some freaking awesome bakeries and restaurants on almost every corner.
Somehow, I manage.0 -
Are you kidding?! I would LOVE to live in a city! There are so many more options for a person to have something healthy! Come live in my town, then talk about how hard it is to live some place and eat healthy!! There is literally not one, ONE, single place that has low calorie options, unless you want to have an iceberg salad with no dressing and no fried chicken on top. Going out to eat with friends is the most depressing thing I can do around here. It's all deep fried, smothered in sauce, served with ice cream at the end. I'm limited to buy what we grow ourselves (cattle and produce) at local farms. I have nothing interesting to eat. First world problem if I have ever heard one! lol Plus, you get to walk it all off! I love visiting NYC, my brother in law lives there! I hope you find some better options for you!0

You clearly haven't been to very many small towns.0 -
Amazing food porn there.
Maybe split it with a friend if you can't resist any longer?
This, ^^ and this ^.
Plan for it. After a killer workout treat yourself to a new dessert to try, and either split it with a friend, or ask them to box up half before they even bring it out, so you're not tempted to eat the whole thing.0 -
Seriously? I would love to live someplace like NYC. Just the specialty food stores and markets alone are worth it! It would be soooo much easier to eat wonderfully there than in a little hick town that I live in. We don't have any quality grocery stores, or fantastic places to eat. We have mega chains of everything, and very few quality independent restaurants - all of which are downtown, which means they're usually full to brimming with drunk college kids in the evening. :-P Places with practically no options are much harder to live in than places with almost limitless items.
You have it made! I'm totally jealous.0 -
Can you please give me directions to where I can find that blue thing? That looks amazing.0

Yeah, sorry, not true at all. Where are you getting your sources, anyway?0 -
I kind of hate you right now...*bellygrumble0
